Pretty much the title says it all. I just ordered a Model 1 7.62x39 11in upper. I'm looking for the most obnoxious brake for noise and flame with my M16.

Any good ideas (and of course photos would be great :) would be appreciated.

VERY loud brake on my AMD-65. Concussive sound. Sounds like my 50BMG without the pressure wave. Flamethrower. Sorry, no pics. If you want one, I have an extra. PM me. You'll LOVE it!

How would it sound with out anything??? Or would a certain one sound louder than a open barrel?

A brake should be more obnoxious than just a slick barrel.

Below is a pic of my 7.5" 7.62x39 upper.
It is using a modified DPMS Phantom brake bored out for 7.62.
I threaded my barrel 9/16x24.
Of course the flash hider was originally 1/2-28.

I don't if its the most abusive or whatever but it is loud. More importantly, it really helps controlling it.

I also have videos of it running on my website link below.

Amphibian... Where did you get your 7.5 inch upper??? I see a few have the 11" but the 7.5 seem a little rare...

I got mine years ago from Kurts Kustom Firearms years ago.
If I was going to do it all over again today, I'd do it myself. It took him a long time to do it and the gas port was too large. It has been an ongoing battle getting it to run. I pretty much accept the fact that its a parts eater. I've broken many extractors and bolts in it. I do have an adjustable gas block on it now and it still eats parts just not as bad. I think the 16" 7.62 is much softer on the bolts and extractors but then its not as fun.

I am looking for something for the Non Full auto ranges... So it is going to be 7.5 inches... And I need a M16 upper in 7.62x39....

The ones I seen at bushmaster were around 2 bills for a barrel alone and it was an 11 inch one... I know they are a little on the pricey side...

(snip)

Is that one shot or are we seeing a burst?

Thanks!

Mike,
It was one shot since that still was extracted from a video.

Brian Ski,
Unless, you like replacing parts, I think you should reconsider getting a 7.5" 7.62x39 upper.
I shot it again on Friday using a new extractor since the last time I shot it, it broke another one. I think I have broken about 8 of them so far. About 3 bolts. Killed 3 different red dot sights.
This time it broke my AAC rate reducing buffer. The pin that holds everything together sheared off.
My pistol grip and stock were shaken loose. This setup I have tuned the gas system so it is turned down quite a bit so it is just enough to hold the bolt back w/ one of the USA mags.
I personally accept the fact that its a parts eater and still enjoy shooting it but just a warning to you if you plan on going this route. I think the majority of people out there would not want this setup because of its parts eating ability.
It sure is great for looking for weaknesses in your setup though...:D
I've since switched buffers and using a red dot sight rated for .50 BMG.
I think you also have to be careful that it may be hard on your lower if you are not using a strong enough buffer spring and heavy buffer.
I'm using a RDIAS so I don't really care.
The 7.62 bolt face doesn't leave much metal on the sides of the lugs so it is going to break eventually. I think in SEMI it would last longer.
What I think would really save it would be making a gas piston operated upper. That is something I have planned but it is not a priority right now.

Thanks for the info... Still kicking around the idea... I have heard of several people that said theirs have been working well after some work.... But that has been before I really started looking into it... To me it looks like a bit of work fine tuning the gas port setup....

It is not a big deal getting them to work but eventually your extactor or bolt WILL fail. May take a while but it will happen.
I'd say on average, I break an extractor about 1 in every 3k rounds.
Note that as I mentioned before, I have the minimal amount of gas coming in for reliability.
You will get better results in a 11.5" or 16" but then it doesn't throw flames like this one does.

I ended up at the other end of the spectrum with a Colt flattop HBAR 20". Now that have a dozen franken mags - starting to look at a shorter 11 to 16 upper.

Regards
John

P.S. Amphibian the 7.62 x 39 upper following me home ... is in part the result you your posting ..... keep up the good work ;)
