Hi Maryland people,
New member here.
Wondering, are IMI Uzi's legal in maryland if they have the 16 inch barrel? I know the vectors are.
Thinking about getting one
http://www.forthehunt.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=30664862
but cant find any online literature on it...

Doesnt matter who made the Uzi, as long as it is a 16" carbine, and not a pistol, it is ok in MD. By the way you can have an SBR or full auto Uzi also in MD

What is the deal on getting an SBR in maryland, i know you pay the ATF tax stamp (200 dollars?) but do you need to aquire a special license to do it?

I'd really like to have an SBR mini uzi, but wondering if it is practical for me to do.

I'd appreciate any more info you might have on it.

Thanks,
Moses

You will need the blessing of your local CLEO for his signature to get it SBR.
No speacial license is required. just TAX..

Some states have regulations in addition to the requirements of the NFA. Your best bet is to talk to a Class 3 SOT in your area in MD about it. They would be able to clue you in about any state or local laws that may apply in addition to the NFA.

Maryland SBR is no different than any other state..nothing but normal Form 3/4 tax paperwork.

The beauty is thats how you get to have an UZI pistol in maryland...buy the pistol complete the paperwork for a form 1 then install stock upon approval.

SBR mini is the only way to go....

thanks for the info mdshooter and everyone else.
I agree, sbr mini is the only way to go.

So glad i don't need to do the CLEO :)
I am learning a lot from the other well informed, knowlegable uzi owners.

NO NO NO NO....If you read what I said then you understand that YOU WILL NEED A CLEO just like any other FORM 3/4 paperwork.

This is Maryland...its easier to own a NFA controlled item than it is to purchase a .22 pistol.

Find yourself a local dealer who deals in NFA items he wil lhelp with your paperwork for a transfer fee sometimes its easier just to leave it up to him. You will still have to meet the CLEO for the signoff, but certain dealers have relationships that make the process much easier.

You will need the following:
BATF Form 1
BATF/FBI Fingerprint Card
- I am missing one more paperwork item....go over to Subguns.com and look in DANBREWS forms on the opening page.

If you already own the mini and want to the SBR then you will also need to arrange engraving of your receiver. If you want to purchase it from Vector then just find a dealer and let him guide you through...

Hope this helps

Thanks again MDshooter.
I guess thats good news.
Do you know if Gilbert Guns in rockville is an example of such a dealer?

You have to renew the stamp every year, is that fact or fiction?

I know they have full auto in their range.

thanks for the clairification!

You do not have to renew the NFA tax stamp. It is a one-time tax on the registration and/or transfer of the weapon.

The acceptable CLEO for the entire state of MD happens to be the MD state police at the Waterloo barracks in Jessup. You have to take your completed form 1 or 2 or 4 to them with two completed FBI fingerprint cards and one orange CJIS finger print card. The cards cost $5 apiece at various locations, I had mine done at the Pikesville CJIS office, they do a good job and have modern printing equipment that doenst involve any ink on your fingers. Once you give the MD state police the ATF form and the three fingerprint cards they will run a complete background check on you much like the ATF will, and they will mail the CLEO signed forms back to you (oh by the way, they charge $18 for this servi ce). This will take anywhree from 1 - 4 weeks. Then you can mail the completed forms to the ATF and the real wait will begin.

Yeah, I have my eye on a SBR mini too, screw Marylands assault pistol ban. I am even thinking of SBRing my Cobray CM11 carbine just so I can have one of those evil M!1's that MD hates so much.

You are pretty close...

If you are going to SBR it yourself you need..

2 copies of the form 1... both need to have original signatures..
2 fingerprint cards
1 citizenship compliance certificate.

And a check for $200...A one time fee for the life of the transfer... If you sell it it will need to be UN SBRed or transfered on a form 4 with another $200 tax.

Then you need to wait until the form comes back before you SBR it.

If you got any more questions sound off...

I hear MD is actually pretty easy for the sign off since its done by the state police and not whoever happens to be elected to be sheriff at any particular time. That's good news because MD has some pretty goofy gun laws and is what I would otherwise consider a gun unfriendly state.

You're going to have trouble buying mags for it in MD. But across the river in VA there is none of that nonsense. You can buy mags at a gunshow, or have a friend buy them. There is nothing illegal about doing this. According to MD law, in state sales of high capacity magazines is illegal. Ownership is not. It is perfectly legal for a MD resident to buy high capacity mags at a gunshow or from a individual in another state where they are legal (say VA) and transport them back into MD. This may not be the case with other states who have restrictions on high cap mags, but it is the case in MD.

If you want to try a full auto out, drop me a line. I live in Northern VA.

I have to agree that an full size uzi looks a little goofy with a 16" barrel. A mini looks really goofy with a 16" barrel.

The state police in MD are pretty much impartial about the CLEO sign off, as long as you meet the criteria they will sign without any personal feelings involved. If you can legally own a handgun in MD, you can legally own a NFA item. Upon receiving a machine gun you do have 24 hours to register the weaon with the state police though, and this state license must be renewed every year it's like $10/year.

I live near Gilberts, shoot there often and ordered my full size Vector from them. Great guys and they know the ropes on the paperwork. I am going to SBR my vector when I have the chance to get all the fingerprint cards togther and drive over to Jessup. Gilberts has a full auto full size for sale right now-think he is asking 4500. I am tempted but am saving for a mini full auto. Nice thing is if you buy from him you can shoot your full auto at the range while you wait for your ATF paperwork to clear-instant gratification!

$4500 is a good buy for a Reg. Bolt. If it is a REg. reciever... IT is a screaming deal.

In2Deep, do you have a number for Gilbert's? Are they an indoor only range?

The numbers for Gilberts is (301)-315-0300 or (301) 217-0055, they open at noon. It is an indoor only 75ft range. Their website is: http://www.gilbertindoorrange.com

Nice bunch of guys. Don't know the deal with the full auto if it is a registered bolt or receiver. Looked at in once a few weeks ago when I was waiting for the Vector to come in.
