Captain Monty Posted.....

The Uzi situation may change very soon. A member of the TASK Team has been experimenting with his Uzi and has made a very innovative change to it. HIS UZI FIRES FULL AUTO FROM A CLOSED BOLT. I expect that he will have everything fine tuned in a month or so. When it is ready, I will write a story about his closed bolt Uzi for SAR.

Yeah, I saw that he or someone else posted about it a week or so ago. It is Mike Sawyer that came up w/ this conversion method. They mentioned that he was able to control the ROF from like 500-900RPM and used it in the last Knob Creek match.
I'm curious to know how it was done. I am guessing it may be something like the method that was used in the Firepower publications UZI Pistol to FA conversion. I have some of the parts for this setup and my RR MICRO's receiver came modified for that conversion. It consists of two cuts that need to be made at on either side of the magwell cuts on the bottom of the receiver.
I'd hope that what Mike has come up w/ doesn't require any mods to the receiver.
I find it interesting that Monty posted all the positives to open bolt which I entirely agree with. Mag changes are much faster w/ open bolt since the bottom of the bolt won't be pushing down on an already loaded mag. This was also told to me by board member "TFA" who has won the Creek at least 3x.
The big plus I do see is if you want to compete at the Creek you can do both open and closed bolt classes w/ the same gun.

Wouldn't the easiest and most obvious way have been to modify a full auto bolt to work with a semi striker? Not much work needed to do to mod the bolt for the conversion as far as I can see.

Sure getting closed bolt is not the "big deal" here. I have the full size, MINI and MICRO all in both open and closed bolt full auto. BTW, the striker assemblies are the same for semi and FA.
All the FA closed bolt setups I have are all factory IMI as well.
But the closed bolt versions all run very fast over 1400 RPM.
The cool thing is Mike Sawyer was able to tune the ROF from 500-900. I think the only way to do this is with a secondary sear. This is how the Firepower book on the UZI Pistol conversion was done which requires some small cuts to the receiver.
If Mike was able to accomplish this slow ROF w/ an unmodified UZI receiver, now that would be something!!

I met Mike Sawyer at the Creek and I have spoken with him on the phone a few times. He has come up with a cool idea.
