Here is a $19.99 Group Ind. S/N reciever from D&D being made into a Mini Carbine UZI. Reciecer as came from D&D was in the white with a white coating of some sort. a few weeks has made a lite layer of rust in the tropical climate.

BTW do you blue before you weld??? I thought you weld unfinished parts and finish later???

awsome work. Please keep posting.
The mini UZI doesn't have the blocking bar right? Hmm, is it easier to weld up the Mini receiver than the full size?
suka5168
05-17-2005, 10:42 PM
I just blued it for the fun og it first. I'll grind off the area to be weld when the time comes..
The mini does not have a blocking bar, but the back plate is different (which I got from Rex at Vector) from the full sized.
Right now i running into some aligment problems with the Trunion and the feed ramp along with the top cover.
I should write a full summary after i have completed the whole thing... WISH ME LUCK...
BTW i have no shop and is doing things with some basic hand tools, Dremel and drill. :(

It looked like some basic tools, but your work looks great.... I think Vector had a lot of problems with barrel aligning and keeping everything square.... Just take your time and clamp well...

Can you hook a tape measure on the end of the receiver and give us the measurement to each cut?
suka5168
05-22-2005, 01:46 AM
here is the rear section. Notice that the GI recievers are really out of specs...I had made the jig from a solid peice of brass and a drawing i had measured out....The sight post will need to be bent or smashed to fit the correct specs...
droog
05-22-2005, 01:54 AM
Could you maybe put it in a press and squish it down alittle?
suka5168

This was a brand new UZI full sized Top cover ordered from CDNN still in the grease.

This is the Model B sights that didnt fit into the Model A sight base. I rewelded a plate over the original hole.
suka5168
05-22-2005, 04:44 AM
Most of the component cut ready to be welded... Still some aligment problems to tweak.
Notice.....
The aligment bar/rod is thru the trunion, ramp, and rear aligment jig.... 19" barrel at top.. Bolt, Striker Assembly, and Op Spring w/ buffer....
Droog,
Ruler is pic'd, most of the measurment are in a previous tread..

Going to Weld it MeSelf.. Just bought a Lincoln 135 MIG welder that was a floor Demo for a good price, but dont have any CO2 Gas (just to expensive) . So it will be Flux welded. Can always clean up the splatters.
Mostly done with all the major cutting and need to grind some of them to meet up and join with each other. Still need to find a rear leaf spring for the sight/cover catch.

I have got a mig with gas... About 3 times better than the flux core... Seems to get the flux in the weld.... And you have to do chipping of the flux to reweld or finish.... But like my old teacher told me... "Do the best with what your got"...
I guess the TIG is the way to go... But that is to expensive for me for now...

The very left one is yours..:D I striped it and redid the whole thing in a new automotive black. The quality is really noticeable poorer than the IMI's... :( even on the trigger pull.
But it does work fine

Welding a fire selector block for the SMG lower with a 8mm lug mount hole.
suka5168
06-06-2005, 04:12 AM
Yes the alighment bar is a steel rod that is stepped. It a nice piece of tooling if you are to make the Uzi from weld up parts.
Here is a scrap piece of door L bracket , being cut for the selector block.

Not to worry mate ! I've been collecting parts for the past year or so. It has certainly come close if not more than a NIB Vector @ $550. Its for the shear intrest of building one not to save $$.
As you may know that there arnt many parts in the SMG kits that are usable in building a semi 922r Uzi unless you have access to some serious milling/ fab tools and swaping part for USA made.
Many people prior have given up on a build, so I'd thought I do a step by step process for the UZITALK board. It is also helpful to have a copy of the D&D weld up process booklet in hand , which shows the step in detail pictures.

Is this front mount something that has to fabed or can it be bought?Im not looking to save money either as its easier for me to come up with $100 here and there than it is to come up with what they want for a vektor which Im thinking is more than $550 now Closer to $650.Besides Ive built about a dozen AKs a couple of Fals and too many bolt guns to even think about so I thought I would try something else.

Here a range report of the Little UZI,
Place 5 rds in mag as per range rules. Run about a half box of CCI 9mm Blazers. It run flawlessly with no hick-up, jams of misfires, ,, 100% prefect operation..

You will have to order the Moly resin from Norrel. I have had good luck on AKs using Duplicolor engine paint and baking in the wifes oven for a couple of hours. You can get that at Wally World or any auto parts place. As with any finish make sure you clean everything really good and wipe down with acetone or laquare thinner before spraying.

Boy, it was hard work.. time and labour wise , matching the sawed off parts together..... No wonder Vector charges $1000 to cut a full to mini...But i was sure worth the fun and excitement. I looking forward to doing another one.....
Not to forget that i only had the Basic B&D Drill , $29 grinder, $1.99 hack saw, a dremal tool, one single lonely hand file, and a cheap Flux MIG welder..
Want your RR full size cut :D too bad im not an C2/FFL/SOT hehe

Id say the BITCHIEST part of the whole project was to drill the front sight hole and rear sight mount hole.. welded over and drill out about 4 -5 times due to misalligments.
Even drilled out & rewelded the Trunion yesterday to fix a slightly uneven tilt within the reciever..

Awsome job dude.
A couple of questions: How'd you strip the paint off? Man, that looks almost like a chromed finish!
I notice it has a serial number. Since you started with a folded stamping, I assume it was never logged anywhere as a firearm. Do you have to submit any paperwork when you make your own like this?
Does Duplicolor come in a spray can or do you need to use a sprayer?
droog
06-19-2005, 10:21 PM
duplicolor comes in spray cans at Wally World. You can get it in a bunch of colors.
cvasqu03
06-19-2005, 11:05 PM
Couple more questions.
How did you compensate for the out of spec receiver when welding the backplate & rear sights?
What did you do to match up with the ejection port on the top cover?
suka5168
06-19-2005, 11:28 PM
How'd you strip the paint off?
Wire brush attachment of the grinder... it was fast. and the inside i used the dremel tool..
This was a $19.99 Group reg'd semi reciever so it was FFL as a firearm already to me, acually it was easyier to get the other side out of spec rather than getting the odd side to spec. using a Vise Grip and table vise.
All of the cutting and welding was from example & post on this site (thanks Cookie) most other times it was questa-mation and rough eyeball... I didn't have a caliper or high tech gizmo and just a POS ruler in Cm

The "A" is impossible to detent with the block welded in place.
This is most important as it prevent the Sear from staying down below the holes in the reciever and allows the Disconnector to disconnect the trigger.

The inside view , the goldish color is Militech oil reflexed from the flash
The reciever walls are not thinned at the welds.Trunion is stamped "US". and only the left sear pad protuding into reciever.

I like how you photo-edited off the 3' long barrel. It looks sooooooooo good with the "right" length bbl. AGAIN, COOL WORK!:D
ETA: After watching this thread I was ready to sell my AC-556K and get a Mini SMG to be a "brother" to my full-size SMG. But before you completed your build, I finally got the Ciener .22 lr kit to run flawlessly in full-auto in the Ruger. Now I have a 3rd .22 MG to let my dead-beat relatives shoot when they visit AZ. The Ruger has one BIG advantage over my UZI & M16 .22 guns.... the 3-round burst setting. You get 10 bursts out of those pain-in-the-ass to load 30 rnd Ciener mags. Since there is not a current .22 kit for the Mini UZI, I will keep the shorty Ruger.
suka5168
06-21-2005, 11:53 PM
The full sized semi UZI 22 bolt from Vector will just drop into the mini channel..no mods needed
All i need to do is send my extra 22 FS UZI barrel from Nmrch G Parts to BarrelXchange and cut of the brench end , re chmaber the new section and sleve the forward to 16" ....or do you think i can chop the barrel myself? Honestly?
It will be Cool !!

It was about 3 weeks to do. with the shity equipment took alot longer than a full shop such as cutting the reciever took one whole afternoon. Most of time was spent thinking how to tweak some misaligment and reenigneer some thing i couldnt do with the tools i had.
Im really lazy and started every few days at about mid afternoon and finished up around early evenings. (After the grinding noise got to my parents.) Didnt get much done on a daily basis as runing around to Home Depot / Lowes and caring for my little girl that always hung around the garage playing with the tools / welder.
With a cool shop and all it may have only taken a week and without having to go back an redo some lop sided drill holes with a portable drill.
