I got to test drive Troys’ (BarrelXchange) caliber conversion kits at Bulletfest on Saturday, June 28. We had initially met Friday at the barn for sign-in, he was out front when I came out.
I can only offer my experience, my firearm is a IMI semi-auto “B”, so that is all I had to work with, and that is what Troy had on hand for demo, semi-auto parts. I used his bolt, it was a 9mm semi bolt, with face opened slightly to accept the slight larger 40/10mm parent case rim diameter, I looked, could not really see diference, at least not for the added .015 radius over the 9mm.
We went to install his demo 40 barrel, but the index flange was a bit larger than the IMI flange (overlap of ears), so it would not index into my trunnion(Troy stated he did not have access to a good IMI trunnion), so I can not offer any 40 specific comments, other than it does use the std 9mm mag (that is what was in hand for demo). The new barrels he had in the wrapper were cut fine and dropped right into place (16“ semi-auto barrels).
We went ahead and installed a mag loaded with 357 SIG, hollow points if I recall--- I was expecting some kind of major bang/bolt thump, but the firearm fired similar to the 9mm, fairly mild, compared to my 45acp stuff I was shooting (RCBS 230 LRN mold w/ 8.5gr AA-#5, real nice bump). All fed fine, eject fine. The 357 SIG was fed from a 41/45 mag (single stack feed), with the lips moved in slightly to retain the rounds in the mag.
For the final test drive, I swapped the SIG barrel for 10mm barrel. Troy gave me a mag of Remington manufacture 180gr in the nickel case, loaded, and fired... recoil was similar to average 9mm/SIG rounds previously fired. I suppose if somebody loaded the 10mm a bit heavier, recoil might be more noticable? As a side note, if you plan to reload for 10mm, you will have to remove a ding at mouth of the case, as with what you all are finding with 45acp, the 10mm case is a whole lot longer, and gets dinged good..... the 357 SIG did not get dinged. Here again, 10mm was fed via the 41/45 mag, fed and eject just fine here.
I think the 40 would be nice for somebody that wants to shoot steel, with probably near identical recoil to the 9mm, loads of brass for next to nothing, especially if you shoot with LE, I have had buckets of brass offered to me. Add a suppressor to the 40, and look out!
