Wow... I figured it wouldn't be the easiest fix in the world (I'm a butterfingers), but was I swearing up a streak this morning!
For those unfamiliar with the story (otherwise skip to next para): My gun quit during a pretty good dollar rental. (See http://www.uzitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22805 for the story.) After (I suspect) 37 years of use, my cocking lug got so beat and buggered that it also ruined my ratchet spring. This forced the ratchet tooth to lock into position, preventing the gun from being cocked and holding the bolt partially open.
I picked up a new cocking lug with installed ratchet spring from Vector and a complete replacement ratcheting top cover from L&L at SAR. This morning I began to repair my existing top cover. After a VERY confusing half-hour of trying to fit that tooth into the cocking lug with spring, I found that the cocking piece had the ratched spring installed BACKWARD! It's amazing how much easier things go when they're installed correctly. :bang
It took another 30 minutes to get the assembly reinstalled into the top cover- you really do need a third hand to do that right! What annoys me is that the cocking knob and slot cover still seem lose even after tightening the cocking screw as much as possible. The cover always did seem a little on the lose side, but not as much as this...
So long as it fires when I take it out for a test fire tomorrow, I suppose. At least I have a spare top cover should stupid happen....
