Gents,

Disassembled the 32 round mags I had purchased and found varying degrees of preservative grease, dirt, and dried crud inside. Someone had mentioned using a dishwasher to clean dirty mags so I decided to give it a try. I disassembled the mags and put the bodies in the vertical position, springs in the top rack, followers, and base plates in small baskets.
Set the washer on "pots and pans", hot wash, and dry cycle. A couple hours later I had spotless parts. The process works WELL. Soap was Electrosol "pelletized" cleaning agent.
You may want to have a spray lube handy, as the parts come out devoid of any lube or protection.
Mine got a wipe down with Break-Free CLP immediately. Wipe down the internals and springs, as well.
Darn things work like new where as before I had a few that were "sluggish" due to preservative grease.
Warning!!! Do not do this while wife is at home!

Wes

Thanks Wes, sounds great! Fortunatley my wife is a tremendous fan of both the UZI and me getting familiar with the dishwasher. How can I lose?

I tried washing mine on the normal cycle but they shrunk and now they only hold .380s. From now on, it's cold water and Woolite for my UZI mags.

Might want to run the dishwasher a few times between the mags and the next load of dishes to get rid of any possible residue - there's lots of nasty stuff in mags & ammo that I wouldn't want to ingest, let along have my kids ingest.

Just a thought.

Dishwashers are great for stuff like this. I also love 'em for cleaning aluminum car parts, my Rover's intake manifold and plenum cover came out spotless!

Well if you want to sell some of those Uzi .380 mags, I'll try and modify them to fit in my MAC.:moon

Be careful doing this. I once put bunch of cosmo covered rifle parts in my dishwasher and ran it. Parts came out looking great -- inside of the dishwasher did not. There was a thin film on the inside of the washer. Ran it again with nothing in it but a lot of soap, but no luck. I must have spent three hours scrubbing the inside of that thing to get the film off. Thank god the wife was out of town that weekend.

Gents,

Thanks for your replies. I posted it as a matter of interest. Love some of the humorous responses.
bendavid25, Boxers or briefs? Gotta be careful. I'm not sure I want my magazines "Downey Soft".
The warning was appreciated as well. Holy moley! How much cosmoline/grease did those parts have on them?

Often see free dishwashers on craigslist from people that upgrade to new dishwashers. Since I have a good size shop I'm having thoughts of picking one up for just this use, car and gunparts. "Hey honey I'm going out to the shop to clean parts!" Now picture dean with the dishwasher running, feet kicked up on an empty chair, drinking beer and watching COPS reruns on cable. Priceless, like the old dishwasher!

I use a large stock pot and Trisodium phosphate (TSP) to clean/degrease parts. Just boilf for an hour or so and then straght into the over @ about 250degrease to boil any excess water out.

I use K1 kerosine and a bottle and tooth brush, then let them dry for a day. It's better than mineral spirits and does not have additives like diesel fuel. Some call it water white kerosine but I call it a sling blade. Opps wrong story.
