For starters, I believe we have a bunch of Members with a wealth full of info and picture to share.

jmikesteen, emerz, YOG, jetskrtal , jyuzamas, and others; please if you folk can contribute to build a Galil Library it would really help the Galil community. With the Century Kits hitting the market we are sure to generate alot of traffic here.

Friends,

I do have articles from various '80's and '90's magazines that I have photographed and would love to share with everyone. The problem is they are "large". Would need a lot of space somewhere to post them. And of course, the "legality" issue of posting such articles.

If anyone has ideas, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Joel N.

When photoing parts and accessories it would be nice if we could try to standardize the background. A white sheet of paper would be great. A section on hanguards, slings, bolts, bipods, builds, etc. in the future would be awesome.

If you need any pictures of parts from me I am on it. Between me and BlackTen we have 7 mint IMI barels and lots of mint parts. When I go to Israel I am sure I can also obtain some Galil in action photos. I would love to help in any capacity. We should also try to obtain detailed photos of the different recs. New Helvetica, ORF Gen1 & 2, etc. I also now know that there were at least three versions of the bipod and two different versions of the 5.56mm bolt. A reference on mags. would also be awesome as well.

I just bought a new printer/scanner last night. So, soon I hope to scan my articles onto a CD and then send it to Dave for posting on this web site.

I work 2 jobs so I'm a pretty busy guy. This will take a while, but I'm very eager to see it completed.

Sincerely,

Guys I spruced up some photos I took of compliance parts for the Galil. I added the company logos that relate to those specific products to each photo and used a standard white background. Where should I send them?

Built on a postban Mossberg Galil .308 receiver. The little milled out area on the left side of the receiver where some of Mossberg's markings were removed, the warning markings on the right side of the receiver, and the milled out area for the standard Galil quick release scope mount.
Real originals GALATZ go for around $12,000-$15,000 dollars if you can find one.

If jmikesteen could take a photo of each mount individually on a white background that would be awesome. He won't even have to remove the riser from his Tactical Gas Tube as I am submitting a photo of the one I just recieved. The tube has a Picatinny rail running along the top and is manufactured from steel. I believe jmike told me they were originally available through Botach.

Galil NEW Barrel from Green Mt. threading
13mm x 1.0 RH on the "new" barrel sent with all the Galil kits and original hider, No possible way of being confused with 1/2"-20 or 1/2"-28 as gauged.
From the tip of the barrel to the end of the cut it's 16.5mm long, with 13.65mm of that being threaded.

Receiver end threads on a .223 are 21mm x 1.5 RH

Replacement ejector shown sitting on receiver rail. It is a perfect match to the original. Quality is excellent, appears to be a factory piece. It looks like the damaged ejector & part of the rail would be machined away, replacement located, holes drilled & rivets installed. I got this on Ebay a few years ago .It was listed as an "Uzi" ejector.Anyone have any info on these?

2many,

Awesome photos. Awesome. Great skills and great photos. That ejector is something else. Amazing replacement part. I never thought about it before, but that ejector does not look like the ejector on the ORF reciever? Were there two versions of the ejector? Don't think so. Any info? I have to look at Black Ten's ejector.

There were actually three versions of the bipod. There was another early version that was assembled with screws. I will try to post photos later.

Sayeret Shaldag, thank you for the comments. My photo studio consists of my digital camera, a mini tripod I got from the Goodwill store, a lamp & a few pieces of white cardboard.I may have to add another lamp to get rid of some shadows.Plus I am always careful to crop out the toes,no one wants to see that.:)

The pic of the ejector is from my AA M372( early transitional model w/ARM gas block , but AR furniture & no bipod. This is the one that had the Magnum Research info milled out & the AA info restamped in its place.). I had a late model IMI "GALIL SPORTER" receiver & it was the exact same shape. The "replacement" ejector is truly a dead ringer in shape & size to the ejector in the receiver.I have never seen or heard anything about replacement ejectors before. Maybe someone might see this & shed some light? By the quality of this it appears to be factory made, either IMI or possibly South African. If anyone has an armorers manual it might contain info.

I have a few more parts to show comparison pics of, I might be able to post them in a week or two.

Sayeret Shaldag
02-17-2007, 02:34 PM
I can't wait for more photos. Excellent. I will buy a tripod soon. What concerns me a bit is that the ORF ejector is not shaped like a factory IMI one. Here is the photo of the ejector on BlackTen's MR 5.56mm ARM. It is exactly like the one posted above. Notice the early single catch trigger and inverted safety assembly.

I have come across the following parts in my quest to build a South African R4 clone. I will post pics of the ones I have not seen posted yet (like the stock/buffer).

First up, R4 bolt. The bolt has a plastic/rubber sleeve on the tail of the firing pin to preform the same function as a spring loaded FP. Bolt lug is marked with a "P" in a circle, just like the R1 kits that came in (also had a "P" in a circle markings on bolts/barrels/bolt carriers) a while back. It has what I assume is the original rifle S/N electro-penclied on the stem.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0621.jpg

Next is the gas piston/hand guard retainer. The gas piston has a few slight differences, note the lugs behind the piston head, slightly longer/thicker. Also, you can't see it in this pic, but there are three dots on the shaft of the piston. The handguard retainer is the same as an ARM handguard retainer, just no carry handle attachment point.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0656.jpg

Next is an odd pair of handguards. I was/am looking for a "normal" R4 set, which are longer than standard handguards, but ended up with these. R4 rifles all have bipods, R5 rifles are like the IMI SAR and have normal AR type handguards, they are not longer like the R4 HGs. They are carry handle cut, like all South African handguards (that I have seen) and are longer than IMI. I have been unable to find a picture of them in use or any idea what exactly they are for. If anyone knows, please let me know!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0634.jpg

That is all I have to add for now. I hope it is helpful! Oh, and if anyone has an extra set of R4 handguards or a gas tube, let me know ;).

Thanks!

Got some more R4/R5 parts in today. First is a line up of gas tubes, top is normal Galil, next down is R4 gas tube (note lip on the front edge, keeps the handguard retaining lever from flipping open). Last is an R5 tube, note the collar on the end that preforms the same function as the lip on the R4 tube.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0783.jpg

R5 unique parts, which I believe are copies of early SAR parts? Anyway, flash hider (notice the ridge and set screw), Larger front sight hood and smaller post, Gas block (looks more like an early SAR part) and gas piston.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0784.jpg

R4 top cover on the right, notice the difference in the spot welds. There is also a slight difference in the rear sight block, but I couldn't get a good pic of it, I'll try to work on that.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0790.jpg

R4 wood handguard. Longer than the standard Galil handguard, the wood ones are supposed to be Israeli made and part of the first several thousand Galils shipped to South Africa. All, or nearly all, local production is black plastic.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a93/mrf21800/IMG_0780.jpg

R4/R5/R6 plastic stock. Again, the first several thousand R4s were shipped with standard Israeli tube stocks (have been told by a few SA soldiers from that period they prefered the shorter Israeli stocks) and once local production started the new longer plastic stock was introduced. Notice the difference on the stock side of the kunckle, it is machined differently than the Israeli one.

I got most all of them (R4 gas tube, R4 stock, R4 top cover, R4 buffer, R4 front sight hoods/posts and R4 Hand Guard retainers) from John Yuzamas over a period of several months. The handguard I picked up from a WTB on the FAL files board. The R5 Gas tube and flash hider came from Ontario gun (I am pretty sure he's got more) and the Gas block came off of e-bay. The peice I was happiest to find, the R4 bolt I found on ar15.com burried in an AK parts for sale add (also where I picked up the R4 gas piston). I'm still looking for an R4 Plastic Handguard, but I think I've found pretty much all the South African parts I am going to find at this point. The are not easy to locate.

Here is the only known, at least by me , Mag adapters avaliable. The two top ones are the ones with the release lockout to prevent accidental dumping of the adapter if your hand memory goes for the AK release.

Just around, I hate that answer but I have been collecting Galil stuff for a long time and came across them on ebay and Sturmgewehr.com and gunbroker and just different sights even got 1 at a gun show in Fort Myers and one in Memphis. I have 4 of the solid metal in frozen positions and two of the fully articulate plastic ones with mags. One of the plastic has a small glitch with the bipod as you can see in the pict. I got the other brand new one after I shot the pictures.
A while back I posted these pictures on a board and just waited to see how long it was before someone noticed the spiral binder in the back. LOL it was a hoot.

Jet, Super pretty. Can you share who did your build and any issues that came up from the ORF receiver? I have heard they are not to spec and that can sometimes cause build issues.

I am now in the process of buying a receiver from Tenngalil.

Jeff"Tenngalil"did this build ,along with the Magal.
This was already built ,so I don't know of any issues.
I do know that some receiver's differ in their hardness(Rockwell)due to improper heat-treating.
"Tenngalil" check's the hardness on all receiver's prior to doing a build.
If their not up to par, they are sent back to ORF.

I had the above Golani sent to Tac47 Industries in Houston. They removed the barrel and correctly cut it on a lathe and perm attached the flash hider for an overall length of 16.25", it's as close as I'm going to get the SAR Galil without paying the ATF $200. Keith does great work, very pleased.

Here are two of mine. The AR has a Trijicon 3X5, a Harris bipod and a Surefire X400 LED light /laser combo. The bayonet is an M9 and the rail system is a FAB from John at 24 Hour Tactical. I also have a Hadar bolt carrier with a horizontal cocking handle so my knuckles don't bleed. And best of all, underneath all that shit is one fine combat rifle.

Thanks that is soooooo Sweet!!!! How does the ACOG perform? Groups? Santa (AKA my sweetheart Wife) brought me a ACOG and I have not had a chance to put it on my Golani since it is still at Century for repairs. Was it easy to zero. Is you ACOG the 7X? I have the TA31RCO. It us meant for a 14.5 inch barrel. But I was told it works well with the 16inch. I mounted it for now on my POF. It works great. I also have a CCO M-68/CompML2 Aimpoint. I put a UTG rail, a cheaper UTG Scope, Pentagon light, Knight's rail covers and bipod. It was heavy as SHIT after that. How about the weight with yours? Thanks for posting your pics. When I grow up. I want to be just like you man! :)

P.s. Here is a some pics: New ACOG on POF, Heavy Golani with toys (UTG Scope) and my COMP-ML2 yeah it a little beat up but adds character.

He He, extremely nice stuff! My ACOG is a 3.5X35 TAF11. I love it, I can't give you a group size, but it is tremendously helpful with my aging eyeballs. It also helps on full auto to re-index the target faster. It's heavier than crap, the Galil is no lightweight to begin with. I have no plans to carry it very far, the zombies are gonna have to come and get me!

It is a 372, transferable, converted by Fleming but actually done up right by Tenngalil. I think it was one of those 4:30 Friday afternoon conversions back in '86. I mean, it was just OK, everything worked. But Jeff just overhauled it and did shit to it that really made it just like a factory full auto. Enough to make a grown man cry it was so beautiful. BTW, the Beta C-mag set up in the photo with the U/A adaptor didn't work for squat. I had at least a dozen FTF with the C-mag and this thing NEVER has FTF. I've used the same U/A adaptor many, many times with nary a hint of a problem, so, the C-mag is history for me. Totally unacceptable performance today.

Folks, here is a picture of my bolt face. Can anyone tell me if their bolt has a similar looking relief/recess ? The extractor does not hold the round tight to the bolt face - there is a ~0.040" gap if you pull back the bolt till the extractor grips.
http://keithandseija.com/pictures/Extractor/extractor5.jpg
This is the bolt face.

http://keithandseija.com/pictures/Extractor/extractor8.jpg

Here one gets the idea how the round fits when extracted. Note big gap.

This is what the extractor looks like
http://keithandseija.com/pictures/Extractor/extractor3.jpg
To me the extractor looks like new, unless I am missing something ??

How does your spring look? Here is mine for a comparison

Westcliffe01
02-24-2012, 09:03 PM
So if you load a round in there by hand, is there a gap between the base of the round and the bolt face ? Compare to my picture ? I'm having issues with the brass staying in the receiver and not ejecting. It looks like with the big gap, the shell is not under control when being extracted, hence doesn't make it out the ejection port. Most of the brass gets smashed into the face of the breech. I bought some steel case ammo today to compare, have only had reloads so far and got 300 rounds of Black hills as part of the settlement with the dealer that sold me the POS Golani to begin with... I'm trying to figure out how the bolt face / extractor claw relationship can get so far out of whack ??? But then nothing should surprise me anymore I guess ???

If you load the round by hand it should hold the round. But keep in mind that the extractor is designed to capture the rim of the case with the spring loaded claw when the round has just been fired and draw it back to the ejector. If the spring is weak it will not grip the case as well. The claw is only designed to pull the brass out of the barrel just until the ejector strikes the back of the case and throws it out of the ejector port. Try this, snap a empty shell in the bolt, try pulling the brass and the bolt apart with the brass and bolt lined up as straight together as you possible. If your claw and spring on your bolt are working properly it should be difficult to seperate the brass from the bolt (keep case straight as it where in the barrel). Now if you turn the brass in the direction it should eject the bolt should easily release the brass case. I hope I am making sense.

Westcliffe01
02-24-2012, 11:14 PM
I know how it works, but this type of extractor needs to hold the primer face against the bolt face for the round to be "stable". Only that way will the round go repeatably out the ejection port at just the right angle. With the gap it has too many degrees of freedom. My shells seem to go up and hit the inside of the dust cover, then get slammed forward into the breech. My spring is fine. it takes quite a bit of force to deflect the extractor. But the bolt closes on a chambered round every time, so it is not too strong either. I am wondering whether some genius at CIA cut back the face of the bolt to correct head space instead of correcting the chamber ? In doing so of course trashed any possibility that rounds would eject out the side port ?

If there is anyone with a stripped bolt or 2 who could post pictures of what the working face looks like for comparison ?
I note that Sarco have reasonably prices spare parts. Has anyone used them and can comment on the quality of the parts or country of origon ? It looks like I can get a spare bolt, 2 extractors, 2 extractor springs and 2 extractor pins for around $100, which is a deal compared to AKparts ???

Thats what I expected. There does not seem to be any gap between the shell and the bolt face, right ? I tested steel case ammo today. The number of stovepipes was reduced, but if you jam a steel case in the works it looks like it can do a lot more damage. I got 2 significant gouges on the magazine (steel) feed lips from jammed steel cases. lcastillo, thanks for the support.

Don't forget that South Africa had their own 35 round metal mags, with the difference of having a date code on them. Most were in the early 80's.

Unless the fact was; they imported them from Israel and put the code on them after.

The 12 rounders were for sale at APEX. They tend to be in very good condition. If you get the blank version, you may have to replace the follower. I got 2x 12 rounders and the followers had already been swapped out for regular ones. I intend to convert at least 1 of them to legal 5 round status in case needed for hunting.

Hey Ady, my spare room is in a mess, but if you look up the local IPA (international police ossociaion) house, they are just down the road, and very reasonable, even for non members. Ad we can make a range plan. We shoot mostly prone, especially at 300, i would like to try a 20 round, but thinking about it, 12 round would be too short, cause we do use it as a dead rest, cause our Lyttleton made weapons don't have mag well movement (poke at Lcastillo)

Lou,
Those are IZZY mags; you have.

Here are some pics of metal SA mags next to a IZZY metal mag that has the O 36 on it (vertically). The SA mags have a date code that is horizontal. I got mine from a guy how bought these; back in the day, when DSA arms was selling them. Plus I got some from when I bought my R5 build.

The ones from DSA; had a slightly different shade of original brown; were my build was colored matched to those; along with the SA mags.

All have a date code of either 1979 or 1980; which is when the R-series was introduced. They are still packed in the oiled bags in mint condition:)

Sorry for the clarity of the pics; as my camera sucks!

If you notice the 1979 mag in the bottom pic (The original color one); it closely matches the pic you posted on the R-Series thread of the R-4 (I believe it was a R4).

The re-painted one right above it (dated 1980) is close to the color. That color is on file w/ dura-coat

I was told by a "Tiffy" (Armourer) that works for the South African Army that they were and are still used by the South African army to shoot/launch the rifle grenades with blank rounds. The grenades that slip on to the barrel.

Yes! A little chest puffing today on my part! Maybe I can get some of you new and old members to put some damn pictures up. A bunch of slackers on this thread we need new material :eek

So here is my contribution:

My R4:

CNC Warrior Receiver (2nd Gen. run thru Galil Talk group buy set up by member Adipose).

Imported most of parts from South Africa for a little over a year (three month wait for ground shipment) but it was worth it, 80% parts where new.

Highlight of build: Finding an original R4 gas block in the U.S.A. by accident.

Original R4 rifle sling.

U.S. made Green Mountain 1-7 twist chrome lined barrel.

Built by Jeff Miller @ Hillbilly Firearms.

Services performed by Jeff Included: engraving proper R4 SAR selector lettering, lightning cuts on both sides of receiver, engraved proper pressure proof marks, parkerized all parts inside and out and Cerakote black paint finish.

FrankenGolaniStein:

Started out as a AR configurations, Currently it has a R4 large front sight hood, ARM hand-guard poly, original South African gas-tube without flared lip, custom picatinny barrel mounted bipod with IMI Galil feet and R4 poly magazine.

TAG (Tactical Assault Gear) single point sling with MASH hook on rear sling loop.

Finally I distressed all edges with a 3M scotch pad to give a battle used rifle (I call it a Rat-Rifle)

Update: I plan to send the Golani to Jeff for a tune up, convert to a ARM with a 16" barrel and fresh paint.

Thanks Guys! hope to see some new pictures soon :mg

Thanks. I got the rifle with the bent charging handle. To me it works much easier than the normal one. Unfortunately I can't tell you how they do it. But it was done very well. If you at it closely it looks like it was made like that in the factory.
I got the compensator at 'n fellow shooter at our club. He had them made by a machine shop I think. He tried a few configurations till he found this one that worked best. It really works well. Feels like a .22lr. It is very loud though(for the shooter).
I replaced my stock with this one. I like the handling of the rifle with the shorter stock. I got a few different lengths of stocks with the rifle. I have one that's even shorter than this one, by about half and inch or more. But I think that will be a little too short. This stock looks odd because it doesn't have the vertical post in the middle. I'm still considering putting a foam sleeve around the top tube to get the look of the Ace Skeleton stock(for the ar 15's)...
Hope that helps.

Damn. You got it pretty good.
I remember someone saying you couldn't have a HK91 after a certain date along with a bunch of other AW's.

My state is trying to get everyone to register their Semi-Autos and present receipts and documentation of your ownership. For magazines they initially wanted to put barcodes on all magazines (that idea went out the window I guess), but now they want declarations of ownership with sworn affidavits.
Very few are planning to register at the moment. There's still that chance all this stuff gets overturned in court in the next 6 months.

Hey Guys I would like to share this video with you that is entirely in Russian. I don't understand a word but they dedicated most of this video to the Galil. Of course they include the AK in there as a comparison, after all the Galil was copied (not based) on mother Russia's beloved Kalashnikov rifle :D

They also show the wire cutter feature on the ARM and of course the beer bottle opener (which is not really how it is operated). It shows some closeups of the Galil firing and even a model number on some.

Well enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62kCogWf8BE

p.s don't forget to hit translate so you can read the comments in English

That is badass. Looks like something Jeff might have had something to do with. I see some engraving on the side and some cuts.
That front hand guard is with worth a lot of money.

It's a factory gun, all original. I think Jeff would be very pleased to hear his work is indistinguishable from the originals!

I used to collect Lugers and this was common. If you had just one piece that was refinished or not correct original it brought all your original pieces under scrutiny and suspicion ..... Human nature I guess

Let me re-phrase that. I think it's all original, I have no reason to doubt the seller, he's an experienced and respected collector and the rifle looks like it all belongs together.

Maybe, but i just don't know shit about them here in the Galil forum and the engraving on the side is in the same place Jeff put
the engraving on some of my rifles. Thats all. Even more badass.

Tom; the gun is original, including the lightning cuts and white spacer under the butt pad.

Tom,

That is a nice rifle. You know I wonder why the Israelis chose to go with a wooden hand guard instead of a polymer when they copied the Valmet design for the Galil? The Valmet seems to have a pretty straight forward and comfortable design for the hand guards.

It is actually, both this type and the regular M76 handguards are very nice. I guess the Israelis wanted to put their own stamp on it, and did well. The Galil wins hands down on sex appeal IMO!

The M62 is 100% original. The handguard is called a cheesegrater style which is original to the M62. Rifle came with either the wood hand grip or the round plastic hand grip depending on the year. The round hand grip was called the bicycle grip version. Nice clean rifle. I'm sure it's a great addition to your collection.

I'll play. Sorry to pollute the thread with non-Galil rifles, but I just picked up my first one. Friend did the paint job, not me.

Mr Folgers, That is the longest rifle I think I have ever seen! What is the length of your barrel? Is the barrel raised/thicker where you mounted the bayonet lug? Nice rifle. Lou

21" barrel.
Its raised underneath the lug but not around it like on some IMI barrels.

The ugliest duckling

Yes, the Galil Hadar. Built to conform to new regulations in 1989, it has no flash suppressor, bayonet lug or pistol grip. Boy do I feel safer! :roflmao
Imported to the US for only a year in surprisingly small numbers, it failed to sell for obvious reasons. BUT, at it's heart is an IMI .308 Galil. It shoots very well and costs maybe half what a regular .308 Galil costs. I've never done it, but apparently a conversion to a standard Galil can be done without too much difficulty. if you can get past it's looks, it's a very nice rifle. It even has a "civilian" version of the Galil tan sling, same exact style but for some reason a narrower width.

I never thought they looked that ugly.
They somewhat remind me of an M14... if someone made a separate pistol-grip and stock instead of a thumbhole, it would be a pretty cool looking gun.

Sad truth is there are probably more Haddar II conversions than there are original Haddar IIs now. I'd hold onto it and enjoy it for what it is... maybe make a new stock for it also
