View Full Version : Long range SMG shooting disaster

Well I took the Vector out to the 100 yard range today to try it out on semi. I was horrified to see when I made shots into the 100 yard backstop that the impact was about 10 feet higher. Now I'm real glad I bought that front sight tool from Bill Stover (stoverarms@aol.com), yeah it's a shameless plug I know.

Once I figured out how to adjust the front sight and how to use the tool I raised it almost all the way up and tightened it. I was spot on at 100 yards. I had a 18" X 18" target up on the 100 and had a hell of a time hitting the thing. I could see my impacts hitting the target stand to the left or right, or just a little to the side off the target completely. I was satisfied with the performance.

Now I know why Karl was laughing when I said I wanted to try it out at 200 yards. The open bolt makes it tough to be accurate. There's that stupid delay, combined with a 10 inch barrel that makes it almost impossible. I'll have to stick with the AR for over 100 yards. If I put it on raffica I bet I could trail the bullets to make mince meat out of the target though.

If I had a 3'X3' target @ 100 I could hit paper every time. At 50 yards I was dead center every round.

We're not supposed to shoot FA on the 100 yard range and I loaded a mag thinking the gun was on safe, but it was still on semi, so I flipped it to auto by accident and ripped about 10 rounds raising some eyebrows on the line :uzi, oops.

Yeah, you shot it in FA by mistake. :lol Sure, we believe you, don't we guys. :roflmao Karl.

Aww man!

I just looked at my gun and realized I had it set on 200m which would explain why my sights were off. Now I have to go back to the range, flip it on 100 and re-sight it.

:soapbox

Have you tried using the Hirtenberger +P+ at 100yds? You'll find it flies flat and is more accurate than the Winchester at longer ranges.

I was astonished when I shot it from a Ruger pistol and was hitting just about 4 or five inches below my point of aim. Thats damned good for a 5" barreled pistol, and its better from the Uzi. Try it sometime, I think you'll like the added performance of the +P+ stuff.
Never tried it at 200yds (not available)...plus, I'd use my AR15 or a scoped .308 to engage a target at that range anyway given a choice.

The Uzi might be good for sending a bunch of lead down range but if I were to use it in combat it would not be for open terrain, but for an urban environment.

although i am using the red dot scope i mounted to the top cover as opposed to the stock sights...i find that shooting at 2' square steel plates at 100-150 yards is dead on with my uzi....just saturday i was popping an IDPA sillhouette target at 100 yards no problem...all in the center mass area....even in full auto bursts......we setup several 6"x9" steel plates at 100 yards and i was able to knock them down with both the uzi and a glock 17 at 100 yards....the glock surprised me....i didn't think it would do it......

Hey Dustin... you better watch out that no one from the Fowler Range committee is monitoring Uzitalk... ;-)

Seriously, you might want to talk to Karl (our Karl M., the RO). I watched him nail IDPA targets COF with his Vector on Semi at 200 yds. at a rifle night.

Glad you finally got your "little friend".

SOL

When you guys mention Hirtenberger +P+ , are you talking about L7A1 ammo?

I happen to have 2 cases of Hirtenberger +P+ L7A1 from 1992 and was wondering if it was safe for use in a Semi-auto UZI Model 'A' carbine.

I hope that the expertise of this board can put that question to rest.

Best Regards,

Ray

Yes, that is what everyone is referring to. It should be OK to shoot in any UZI, semi or full auto.

Yes, IMI rated the SA barrels for +P+. Karl.

Oh, and :welcome

Thanks again for the quick reply! You guys know a lot more about UZIs than me. Ok, I was apprehensive about shooting the Hirtenberger L7A1 +p+ ammo in my UZI, but now I will try it. Should I use any kind of buffer to eliminate undue wear and tear on my carbine??

No, the SA buffer that came with the gun will do the trick just fine. You may want a spare or two so it can be replaced quickly if it's needed later down the road. Karl.

My semi-only frankenuzi will shoot 3" - 4" groups at 100 yards (16" barrel, 147 grain ammo). No lie. It's more accurate than my AK style rifles.

Yeah but that's closed bolt. The open bolt makes a huge difference believe me. Karl.

Oh, by the way, want better accuracy? The 125gr FMJ seems to be the most accurat out of the UZI. At least that's been my experience. There are also a lot of IPSC shooters that have experimented with the 125 gr. FMJ in 9x21 and came up with the same conclusion. Karl.

Welcome to UZI Talk. The L7A1 +P+ ammo will run great in your UZI.
