For those of you that shoot Wolf or Silver Bear in high quantities, you should be aware that much of their product line uses bimetal jackets.  I've read discussions on other boards on this topic and thought I'd try to get the manufacturer's POV.

Here is the reply I received from them today regarding use of bi-metal 7.62x39 in a Bulgarian SLR-95:

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXXX,

Shooting bimetal jacketed ammunition will begin to wear a regular barrel after about 5-6 thousand rounds,  since you have a chrome lined barrel, you should not experience the same wear.  Your barrel is much stronger and should not have any problems.

The difference in the bimetal and copper jacketed ammunition is that the copper jacketed ammunition is packaged in a box that is half black and half yellow and states on the box Copper Jacketed.  It is very distinguishable from the bimetal box which is completely black.

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in WOLF Performance Ammunition.

Sincerely,

WOLF Ammo

So what I take from this is that if I want to shoot bimetal in my Uzi, I would be well advised to get a quality barrel like the one Bushmaster sells.

Thoughts?

If your talking about, copper plated steel jacketed bullets, I doubt that you'll wear out a barrel with it. The copper guilding metal is sufficiently thick to provide a sacrificial surface as the bullet travels in the barrel.
Much like the "thin film lubrication" in an automobile engine or a racing engine, cranking at 2-7000 rpm.

The chrome used in barrels is to prevent rusting, and to facilitate the use of steel cased ammo in the chambers, as it provides a slicker surface for higher speed extraction during full auto firing.

I wouldn't worry about shooting out a barrel. If you think you'll shoot enough to create wear, spray a little teflon lube in the barrel before shooting and mop it a few times. That should reduce any wear that may occur.

Myself....I'd be proud to shoot out a barrel, as it would mean that I was spending enough time at the range.:D
