Anybody here compete in the summer biathlon? To anyone who doesn't know what that is, here is a description: a 5k race combined with 2 relays of shooting at targets at either 25 or 50 meters. The first relay is prone, and the second relay is offhand. The running distance between each relay is approxamately 1.1 miles, arainged in the format: run, shoot prone, run, shoot offhand, run.

This is a very inexpensive and very challenging sport. The rifle requirements are pretty loose, it only needs to be a .22lr bolt action, 5 shot magazine fed, and have open sights. I see a lot of olympic class competitors (practicing for the winter biathlon) shooting Anschutz rifles that are all decked out, club runners shooting Marlin 2000 rifles, and people like me using their own rifles. I shoot an old Winchester model 69.

While practicing, I can hit strings of targets (4.5cm disks, lined up 5 across) without a miss, but once you add the elements of the race- adrenaline, high pulse and breathing rate, stress, and PAIN- you get something altogether different.

I just finished the last race of the year (except for the snowshoe biathlon in December) in our new venue at Whitetail Preserve, Nescopeck, PA. The course was half uphill, and very steep, which made my time go up and my shooting lousy. I had an overall time of 29:55 with 0-4 misses overall, and got second place in my age catagory.

One of these days I'll get some photos. I don't have any because I'm usually competing.

If anyone is interested in trying a summer biathlon, you could try http://www.summerbiathlon.com/index.html and check to see if you have any races in your area. If you are close enough to make a race in PA, send me a PM and I'll help you out.

Very cool (no pun intended)! I have always wanted to compete in a biathlon. Unfortunately, I live in TX, and snow is very scarce here. I had always wondered whether there was a summer analogue to the winter event. Thanks for sharing this!

Very cool. Unfortunately, nothing in or around Tennessee. I remember doing some very cool training while in the Corps that involved quite a bit of running and shooting. I wish subgun competitions were more physical (pushups, bends and thrusts, running, and etc). This would make it much more challenging. Unfortunately, I don't think this type of thing would probably be accepted in subgun competitions.

Unfortunetly, our state doesn't get enough natural snow to host winter biathlon, even though our running venue is only a few miles away from Sugerloaf Ski Resort. We are going to have a snowshoe biathlon in early January if there is snow on the ground. If not, it will be a cold run!

It is a sanctioned event, but not included in the summer olympics. One can only hope someday it will, but I think it has to get a little more popular first.

Unfortunetly, they will not let you run with your weapon. It stays on the firing line while you make your loop. I think it would be cooler if you had to carry it like the winter biathlon guys do. I guess it is a safety thing.

You would be suprised to see the type of people running at these events. I've seen some big guys run- maybe not Mob's size (Sorry, Mob, no offense ment)- and I've seen little kids (10 years old) run. A lot of women- especially suprising that they were not dragged to the event by their husbands or boyfriends- compete because they enjoy running these type of events.

You don't have to be a marathon runner, or even a good runner to compete; just have enough stamina to complete a 5K (3.2 miles).
