First a disclaimer: I have no relationship with the vendor or manufacturer.

Vendor: Cheaper than Dirt
Manufacturer: Samsonite
Cost: $155 + S&H

I was looking for a hard gun case that would carry at least a couple of subguns and accessories and was rated for airline travel. After a lot of looking around, I settled on a break-down case profile. Break downs are meant for storing shotguns that have been broken down and so they are shorter than a conventional rifle case. They are longer than a pistol case and too large for most subguns (although probably about right for a HK53, etc.). As I mentioned, I want to pack some accessories with it.

I settled on the Samsonite because it seemed to have a lot of good features and a reasonable price tag. It also is a two sided case which conveniently matches the number of subguns I own. Each side has two combo locks and a pair of strong latches. It also has wheels.

I'd like to find some pluckable foam like the stuff you can get with Pelican cases. Would make a nice setup. Anybody know a cheap source?

Here are some pics of the case. Not shown is the nylon zippered shell that you can put on the outside to protect the finish. As you can see, there was room for the Uzi. MP5K-PDW and a Beretta M9 along with their accessories.:

Looks very nice. I may have to check into this. I'd like to have the same setup with an MP5 on one side and UZI on the other.

With the gear you have shown, how much does the fully packed case weigh? I see it has wheels but I'm still curious about the weight.

Can you imagine the look when that bagage handler gets that case home and pries it open! :eek!

High School drop out: Minimum wage.
Job with TSA as a bagage handler: $0.25 above minimum wage.
Work related perks.... PRICELESS!!!

Seriously, nice toys, and I like they case too. :angel3

With everything you see (unloaded mags and drum) it tipped the scales at 53 lbs. of that 53 lbs, the three guns without mags were roughly 14 of it. I can weigh the case empty if you'd like. My guess is that it comes in somewhere around 25 pounds. It's a sturdy thing for sure.

I like that it doesn't "look" like a gun case. Safer to fly with and keep the airlines baggage elves from "losing" important items.

MuzzleFlash,

Is one side of the case large enough to house a broken down 16" barrel AR?

Here's another link with the outside measurements.

I can measure the inside if you need those as well.

I enquired as to the "official" weight of the Samsonite/Vanguard case with the manufacturer (my bath scale is not that accurate :). I also asked about max payload weight. Here's the reply:

--------------
Dear XXXXX,

Thank you for your interest in our products. The dry weight of the
GDS-1125AW is 24.68 lbs. Because this break down case is made with
folded aluminum and reinforced on all the corners, I believe there is no
maximum payload.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Thomas Delhey
