Given the Choice...

If I could purchase today either the Action Arms IMI 9mm Carabine or the Action Arms IMI 45ACP Carabine, both in 16 " barrel.

Which is the better choice and why ???

If it were me, I would look at neither as a bad choice, but here's what I would consider:

The 9mm is cheaper to feed and has more available magazines, (especially high capacity). I would buy the IMI 9mm and then look into a GG lower which uses grease gun mags for .45ACP.

If you're asking which caliber to shoot, I agree with the other guys - get the 9mm. If you want to shoot both, I'd buy the IMI Model 45 since there are fewer of them around, and then get a 9mm conversion from Vector. I wouldn't spring for a grease gun conversion on a semi-auto. It doesn't buy you much for plinking at the range and you can always drop in the 9mm conversion if you need more firepower.

yes i was actually asking to see which is the better model to get based on the model itself and not the cost of ammo to be used with...

Model wise they are pretty much the same gun, except for barrel, bolt, and mag. All of which can be changed. There were fewer 45's built. If you are going to shoot it, ammo, and mag cost would be the deciding factor. If you are buying to save as an investment, production numbers would be the decider. Fewer built being worth more. Either way, you can't go wrong.

I have a different view...get the IMI .45 (provided it is an Action Arms IMI marked gun 100%).
There were less of the .45 IMI guns.
Then...get a 9mm barrel and bolt from vector and shoot the gun in 9mm...for like $150. You'll spend $200+ on a .45 bolt and barrel if you get the 9mm IMI first and then want a .45 conversion (which most people do just because they can!)
Or if you have the funds...just buy both!

what you just said makes the most sense, and also the original imi 45acp itself would be a more valuable and sought out item more now and in the future as well.

Now that timeinspace has his answer, what would be the choice if I were to ask a similar question regarding the Vector 9mm vs the Vector 45 grease gun conversion? If I plan to have both calibers, is there any advantage of buying one caliber first over the other? Both calibers do not seem to be available at the moment.

Can the Vector Uzi with the GG lower be easily and reliably converted over to the 9mm? Are the conversions simple to do and undo?

deepocean,

Buy the .45 GG Vector, the cost of picking up a 9mm bolt, barrel & pistol grip assy. will be less than buying the .45 parts later.

Get the 45, buy the 9mm kit.

I bought a "B" back in 1988, about a yr later had a 45 kit.

Feeding it 45 is relatively inexpensive if you can handload lead. New in box 45acp will severely limit your blasting.

If you want an Uzi, purchase one in 9mm. If you want a .45 acp carbine, go with something designed for that cartridge (e.g., Auto Ordnance Thompson).

I've always thought that chambering the Uzi in .45 acp was akin to chambering a FN FAL style rifle in .243. Winchester. It works well and is very cool, but it just doesn't seem right. Obviously... just my opinion.
