View Full Version : Docter Optics sights

IMHO, the Docter Optics is the BEST red dot sight for the Uzi family.  I have also used the now defunct Tasco Optimas on the Uzi's as well.  The Tasco Optimas are vastly inferior to the Docter Sights.  I am pretty sure that I was the first to put them on Uzi's.  Since I've posted some pics on the net, I've made the mounts for some people and helped others in making their own.
The Docters are available in either 3.5 or 7 MOA.  I currently have one 3.5 and two 7 MOA sights.
There is also another 7 MOA that costs over double the price of the regular 7 MOA that is also waterproof and supposedly brighter.  The Docters have a sensor below the window that senses the amount of ambient light to determine how bright to make the dot.  I have always found the brightness to be perfect.  Absolutely NO washout problems.
The Docter sights do NOT come with a mount.  In the case of the Uzi, I prefer to make my own.  There are two holes in the sight that makes it very easy to mount the sight to anything.  I use 6-32 screws for mounting to a plate which is either screwed or welded to the topcover.  With the Docter sight mounted, there is NO obstruction of the iron sights - you can still see the curvature of the cocking knob through the sight.  I have the height set so that the dot appears right on top of the front sight post.  I also drill out the 200 M sight aperature to be very large since I don't plan on engaging any targets beyond 100 yards.  If the optics or battery ever fails, I can flip back to the 100M aperature.  I have yet to change the battery in my first Docter sight.  The only possible issue I have is the durability of the sight if the gun were dropped on it as the front and rear sight "ears" are lower than the sight but since I don't plan on going into combat I don't worry about it.
Let me know if you have any questions.

i went with the b-squared, as i was concerned about return to zero.
as you can see, i cut it down some to clear the charging knob. all it needed was a little touch up with aluma-hyde. the dr.optic would be slick- but i'd have to come up with a better way to fit the top cover.

the aa mount is the more attractive mount for the larger tubes. to my eyes, it resembles the hk claw mount for the mp5. however, when i got the cover tight enough to suit myself, i had problems with the bolt dragging.

Hey amphibian, I like the Docter set up. Do you have a set price for building/installing these mounts and, where can I purchase the 3.5 Docter Optics.   :) Thanks.

amphibian,

Does this look like the same sight to you? JP Enterprises markets these, but to me (without having seen a Docter firsthand) they look very similar.

The Tasco Optima was made by some company in the UK. At the time Brownells was selling the Firepoint which was the same as the Optima. That JP sight is the same thing.
I have 2 Optimas and also 3 Docters. The Optimas I got only because I got them for around $100. They are vastly inferior to the Docter. Brownells wants $240 for the JP sight which is ridiculous. Botach has the Docter for $245. I know some complain about Botach. I always make sure they are instock of whatever I want first and haven't had a problem. Donnie at Sableco also has the Docter for I think $255. IMHO, spend the extra few bucks and get the Docter and don't waste your money on that JP or Firepoint unless you get it real cheap.

As I mentioned, without having seen a Docter, I thought I might have found something. Brownell's dealer price on these is $200 even - but if it's an inferior product I have no interest.

Thanks!

If you have access to dealer pricing, try Jerry's Sports. They have the Docter for $233 - only to dealers.

how is a little docter sight better than say an Aimpoint ML2?

I never said it was better than an Aimpoint just better than a Tasco Optima/JP/Firepoint.
I know the Docter is rugged but I doubt as rugged as an Aimpoint. I've never dunked mine in mud nor do I plan to. I'm not a weekend commando. I like to play with my toys at SMG competitions and at local ranges. The Docter does that great.
What I like about the Docter is its versatility. Since it has two mounting holes, I can pretty much put it wherever I want to and make my own mounts.
It is compact and has great battery life. I have never had a complaint about the dots brightness level. The sensor does an excellent job of determining how bright the dot needs to be. I don't have to adjust any brightness settings.
I think for the Uzi family, the Docter is the best red dot sight for my tastes. Try putting an Aimpoint on an Uzi and it will be a bulkier setup than the Docter.
Some people don't mind that - whatever floats your boat.

I recently mounted one of the Docter Sights on my CAR 15 and love it. I agree about the brightness of the dot, its perfect!!

Guy i got this from, and a heck of a deal, sight and mount for AR 15 for $100, stated that these were connected with Ziess...anyone heard anything on that??

You got your Docter for only $100? Wow, you stole it. I'd buy another one if I could get it that cheap. Are you sure you didn't get a Tasco?
Yes, just do a search on the web and you'll find supporting info about Docter and Zeiss. Here is a quote,
"DOCTER are manufacturers of good quality German optics. DOCTER-Optic Wetzlar GmbH acquired the East German Carl-Zeiss-Jena (aus Jena) factories and brands. All products are now sold under the DOCTER label. "

How does the Docter site mount on the UZI Pistol? I noticed a small block under one of them mounted on amphibians micro with the drum mag. Then it seemed to be more flush mounted on the rifle in the pic above that. Any ideas on pistol mounts though? Thanks for any help.:)

Jimbo, the picture above is a docter on my MINI. I don't have a MICRO. I'd be happy to take a MICRO if someone is donating. :)
I don't know anyone w/ a MICRO at the moment. If someone has one in FL, I would be happy to look at it to see if it is feasible.
I am doing a small run of full size topcover Docter mounts for some people now. I haven't even started advertising and have sold some already. Not taking any money just reserving them for when they are done. Probably by this weekend.

amphibian-

You are right, I have had Pistol/Micro on the brain lately and even took an extra look at your pic before posting. My eyes saw Mini and there was a short in the system somewhere between my eyes and my fingers, but yep you are right, Micro came out on the page. DAMN, up till now I thought was perfect. Well, I made it 40 some odd years, not bad.

Do you have any idea how the Docter mounts on the pistol?

Greetings!

Are you still taking reservations for the Docter mounts? If so, please count me in and send additional information. Thank you in advance for your help.

Best of wishes

Jimbo, both the full size and MINI mounts are custom mounts made by ME. I would have to get a close look at a MICRO to determine how it would mount.

SingSing, send me an email and we can discuss the full size topcover that I'll be selling.

Its funny, I just responded to a post about my Docter mount TODAY on subguns and mentioned that I'd be producing them and just about all of them are reserved already.
Looks like I'll need to get more topcovers for making mounts.

Thought you guys might like to see this recent picture I took of one of my friend's Vector/Group gun. I just got done making a Docter setup for him. The mount is steel and welded on the topcover. I sandblasted and parkerized it. The parkerizing is a perfect match to the Vector finish. Many people have asked me if the finish will look the same well here you go.
For the most recent pics/info about my Docter mount setups, click here (http://home.cfl.rr.com/c3stuff/uzi/docter.html)
I have just completed a small run of full size Uzi topcover Docter mounts. I had some people reserve some and they are almost all gone.
I have also started to take on some jobs to do the the MINI Uzi Docter mounts too but due to the lack of availability of the MINI Uzi topcovers and more intricate design, it is kinda expensive.
Email me if you are interested in the a Docter ready topcover.

This picture is already at my site mentioned above but since you guys mike like it, I'll post it here too.
Not complicated but it does take some time to do.
Cut out steel plates, drill, tap, align, TIG weld, sandblast and parkerize.

I forgot to add that it is Polymer.
My friend really likes his. It does have a nice cheek weld. I personally think the Uzi folding stock is just so much cooler and you know its all about looks when your shooting a FA Uzi.
