I have some older USA stainless mags that run great and others that won't at all, I've got Thermolds that I've never had a problem with and of course the Ruger 20 rounders that have never hiccuped. I've heard good stuff about the Black Warrior mags that CDNN has as well but have no experience with them yet, it's one of the mags I need to buy some of.

you guys will never guess what happened to me today....

stopped out to the range today to check the conditions (I live in MA so the snow and ice can be a pain for our Officers on qualification day) and I am walking down the line and on the ground is a "Ruger Factory 30rd" mag. Yes a factory 30rounder. Not a cheapo USA crap mag. A factory 30. WOW!!!

No one else around. Anywhere. It was wet and icy so I brought it home and took some steel wool to it with some oil and cleaned it all up in great shape....

what a find....

I have about 6 of the Promag Poly's all have been 100%, only thing is, they will let rounds pop out if you leave them lying in the sun during summer. So far though I've not had any malfunctions with them.
Larry at C-Products also confirmed that they will start making Mini mags somethime in '08.

One time at the range I found a Mini14 sight adjustment tool. I thought that was cool until I read your post.

BELEIVE IT OR NOT, WHEN I BOUGHT MY AC IT CAME WITH 20 OR SO PLASTIC EAGLE MAGS. 40 ROUNDERS, THE FOLLOWER IS LOWERED FROM THE TOP BY A FLAT COILED SPRING LIKE A WATCH? THEY WEOK FLAWLESSLY, A FRIEND WAS LOOKING AT THE MAG AND NOTICE A "BETA" MARK. SO NOW, AT EVERY GUN SHOW I LOOK BUT HAVEN'T SEEN ANY MORE LIKE THESE.

I agree with Nayo's comments. For my Mini-14, the only mags that are consistently reliable are the Ruger factory mags.

I'm thinking about using the Beta C with a tripod mount.

I was reading that the new incarnation of the Mini-14 (I forget what it's called) will ship from the factory with a 20 rounder, reversing a long standing Bill Ruger policy. So the prices for factory Ruger 20's (and maybe 30's) might drop.

Bill Ruger Sr. must be spinning in his grave at high RPM at the thought of 20 round mags shipping to lowly "civilians" and their pocket sized 380 coming out. I inderstand Bill Sr., always the appeaser to the gun banners, forbade such things when he ran the company.

What's next, factory folding stocks?!:D

ha ha....

I would love to see them start releasing the folders again and also some 30rounders.

I will believe it when I see it though....

USA mags have the reputation of being among the worst mags available.

I have 4 USA Mini-14 mags that are built like a tank and work great.

I have 1 USA Mini-14 mag that is equally well built, but, will function 100% reliably only when I exert an upward pressure on the mag while firing.

The problem mag locking (pressed) lug is too high as compared to the other 4 mags.

The functionality of many Mini-14/556 mags hinges upon the locking lug.

Either the locking lug needs to be just a little longer or a little shorter.

From what I have read, the 20 round mags only come with the NRA Edition Mini 14. MSRP $1085.

Hopefully, Ruger will start selling upgraded/improved folding stocks and 30 round mags to us lowly civilians.

Makes sense.

I plan on just bringing my AC556 to gun shows just to see which mags lock up nice.

Other very common problem you will run into with aftermarket mags are out of spec feed lips and followers that let the rounds nosedive into the mag.

Many of the cheaper mags will lock up perfectly, only to double feed or nosedive about every fith round.

I've noticed the mag springs on the el cheapo mags seem pretty weak.

I wonder if some stronger springs might work?

G-man, from my experience you would be better off just buying some Ruger mags rather than trying to make other stuff work. Many of the aftermarket stuff has weak, poorly tempered springs as you say. The bodies are also poorly formed and soft. Most are simply a waste of good sheet metal. Trying to save you the price of the education that I got.......

LOL Thanx for that. I'll prolly end up getting about 5 mags, and leave it at that.

Copes and Cheaper Than Dirt both have Ruger factory 20's new in the box for 50 bucks. There may be better places to buy these since I haven't kept up since I sold my Mini.

It would be a shame for your fine new toy to malfunction due to junk magazines. :thumbs_up
