I just got back from 4-Day Uzi Submachinegun course at Front Sight in Nevada. I had a GREAT time. I own a Vector Arms Uzi and thought I knew it pretty well but there were a LOT of techniques as well as fighting tactics that I hadn't been aware of.

The class size was small which was a big plus. It started with 5 guys, but 2 were there for only a 2-day course, so it ended up with 3 of us. Our instructor was "Magic" who is from Eastern Europe and has real-world combat experience. He is a fantastic instructor and had a lot of depth but was still fun to train under.

The class starts with basic procedures of loading and unloading then moves on to trigger use. All shooting is done with the selector on "auto" and one big point is to teach the student how to modulate the trigger to fire 1, 2, or 3 round bursts at will. Burst shots and single head shots were taught out to 15 yards and single shots to center-mass were done out to 50 yards. Kneeling, squatting, sitting, and prone positions were taught for optional use at further distances.

Drills for reloading and malfunction clearances were done as well. I actually only had 3 minor malfunctions through 2400 rounds which is pretty good considering the desert conditions and no cleaning in 4 days. Other students had more trouble although I'm not sure why. I used 115 grain S&B which worked great, but some had trouble with 115 grain PMC.

Because of the small class, we were able to move through the curriculum quickly which gave extra time for simulators. They have some indoor shoot houses, but also several outdoor simulators through small desert valleys with steel targets. We even ran a drill shooting from a moving vehicle on full auto.

The instructor also took us to "sniper ridge" that looks into a valley that is used for a precision weapons course. We were actually able to hit targets out to 250 yards with the help of a spotter calling the shots.

If you are an Uzi lover and owner like me, this is a class you won't want to miss. I learned a huge amount about the Uzi and on the final skills test, I shot at the "distinguished graduate" level which is the highest. Definitely a good time.

Congrats there OT, sounds like an interesting time.

I'm not surprised to hear of your classmates having problems with PMC ammo. I think the stuff is sub par ammo at best. It also has crimped primers which make repriming a real chore.
I'd have chosen, Wolf or S&B also, with Wolf being my first choice.

Wonder how long it took for your Uzi to heat up from the sun in the desert?

The temperature was actually reasonable in the 80's. The Uzi's never really got too hot and I suppose the open-bolt design helps with that.

At one point the instructor broke out a Gemtech Mossad suppressor - that got pretty hot but he had a cover for it to protect our hands from the heat.

I just stole a Bronze lifetime membership for Frontsight for $4000...they had a silent bid for 22 bronze memberships...I couldn't believe I won a $40,000 membership...I just took their 4 day defensive handgun and loved it.
