SMG match this sunday at 9am held here:

http://www.portmalabarrpclub.com

This is a monthly SMG match and it is the best in the state.
It is held the first sunday of the month.

This match will be a little non-standard as we will be having a "combo" match w/ Cowboy Shooters.

One of the C3 shooters was an avid C3 shooter and cowboy shooter and passed away recently. He has at least 3 sons I know of that shoot. They are having this "combo" match in his honor.
The event will consist of teaming up w/ a cowboy shooter.
It will require the C3 shooter to bring SMG, Pistol and Shotgun.

I may be attending with a friend. amphibian do you know the actual range address. I clicked on the map link and the page is blank and all the other addresses I see on the site are a PO box. After reading their event listing I'm tempted to move north. The arial view of the place looks awesome I wish we had a range half as nice here.

Uh, amphibian, he's right. I'm definitely going this Sunday ... and the map link on the web site is bad. I even tried enlarging the thumbnail and no go -- it's not legible.

How about either (A) a good map link, or (B) some directions?

Help!

Yep, I know. I emailed the match coordinator telling him they need a better map. Here is an email he sent me:

"There is a stick map on the second page of the club's membership application. You can find it on the club web site www.portmalabarrpclub.com under How to Join...application form on page 2. In short, 95 to SR 514 (aka Malabar Road, exit 173. It is around mile marker 173. The exits have been renumbered to allign with the mile markers. Take Malabar Road west to Hurley BLVD. Turn left (south) and follow it to the end across the cannal and into the range.) I did a mapquest to [332-599] HURLEY BLVD SW, Palm Bay Florida and got a good alternate route off of exit 176. (The club's physical address is 610 Hurley but mapquest does not recognize that address.) The nice part about getting off at exit 176 (Palm Bay Road) is if you miss the exit you can still get off at 173. If you miss exit 173, it is about 15 miles south to the next exit.

Hope this helps and was not to confusing."

Thanks amphibian I just got a similar email back from Paul @ the range.
FYI

I also inquired as to if non members had to become members to shoot and if we would have to attend some orientation. He said you do not need to be a member to attend a scheduled match and there is no fee except actual match fees. At the gate
will be a guard who will sign you in as a guest competitor. Oentation is part of the procedure of actually joining the club so we will not have to do that.

Since the ATF has not put a smiley face on my form 4 for my mini-uzi and I have never shot in a competitive anything ever I suspect I will watch and try to take in as much as I can. I'm pretty excited to see cowboy stuff + class III at the same time. I have been a fan of both for ages and have limited experience with c3 (m11, mp5 and a thompson shot to date) and 0 with the cowboy stuff.

Do you know how much the match fee is amphibian and do you have any idea how long the entire event will last? Should I pack a couple drinks or lunch and is any other advice you can give.

Thanks,

- Todd

We have a couple of matches each year where Tony mixes things up a little just to keep it interesting. Usually a 3 gun match...pistol, scattergun, and subgun. I'm sure you guys will have more fun than you're expecting! I'd be interested to hear how you run the match.

Vegas SMG,
Pistol, Shotgun and SMG are not unusual for us either. We also throw "Action Rifle" in there too sometimes.
It is the combining of the Cowboy shooting that I don't think we've ever done.

Todd,
You are more than welcome to use one of my UZI's if you want to compete. Just let me know.
We usually finish up AROUND 3pm.
The match fee for non-members is $19.
They usually bring a water cooler and cups but if you don't want water, bring drinks.
We are having some small potluck lunch afterwards.

amphibian thank you very much for the offer. I would like to take you up on it. How much ammo should I expect to bring and what would you like me shooting through it? I have a couple 25 rd magazines here and a 68 round drum (new in plastic bag) which are awaiting my mini when it arrives. Should I bring any of them?

I'm already smiling,

Well that depends how heavy you are on the trigger...;) and which UZI you want to shoot. Take your pick full size, MINI or MICRO. I'll let you shoot any one you want.

I would say 400 rounds would be enough. 500 to be extra safe.
I usually go less than 200 rounds since I am pulling singles.

I assume you haven't tested the drum yet.
Vector drums are hit or miss. Although I think the later ones are better. I have a C&S drum that is flawless in all of my UZI's including the MINI and MICRO.
I never have used my drum in competition since most stages require mag changes and I am also using my custom extended mag release which would hit the drum.
25 rounders are kinda small for comp usage. I'll bring some 32 rounders for you to use. I would recommend to bring a mag pouch. I use the one made by blackhawk that holds 3 mags.
Also bring a pistol w/ a holster. Also bring a shotgun w/ birdshot. I'm not a shotgunner and I'm having a hardtime remembering what loads we're supposed to use. I think its 7-1/2 or 8. I'll have to check when I get home.
If you want to use it suppressed, then I will require that you get some subsonic ammo.
If you are not going suppressed then I don't mind you using any factory ammo.

I'll be the one wearing the UZITalk.com t-shirt... :D

I was able to shake loose this weekend and will be able to make it after all.

Sofltodd I know how you feel about waiting, I just got my 1st fs fa vector.

Amphibian helped ease the pain with an intro to a guy that let me use his uzi at a match.

See you there. I'll be the guy with the s___eating grin and the new vector.

BTW, how many rounds of shotgun shells?

amphibian
06-02-2004, 06:53 PM
There probably won't be much shotgun. I'm planning on taking (2) 25 round boxes. I checked and I have 7-1/2 and 8 shot. That is what they want you to use.
I hope to see you guys there. The more people, the more fun it is!!

Hi ya soflasmg. I'll be looking for the guy with the grin. I'll be the one wide eyed with another guy looking like a deer in head lights.

amphibian, I do not own a shotgun although it's on my list of things to buy in between a fs uzi and a new pair of shoes. Do I "need" one or can I just not compete it whatever shot gunning activities are there.

What are the chances of getting some pre-competition shooting in? Like a magazine or two? I'd like to do my best in not being a totaly bad shot while I'm there and I'm aiming to hit at least one target throughout the day as my goal. :D If you see me staring at you like a stupid dog it'll be me trying a mental vulcan mind meld on you to suck in some of the experience I am lacking. :poke

I'll be there, mostly shootin' video this time .... but if we get some non-competition range time, keep an eye out for me:

I should credit the photographer, my wife, who I dragged along to the last Hernando shoot. Now if only she'd caught the empties flying out of my Uzi's ejection port....:D

Speaking of which (short thread hijack in progress: ) you S.FL. guys know there's another Hernando event July 4, right? It's a static line, not a competition (though we're workin' on 'em to add an SMG shoot), but Hernando is the largest gathering of MGs in the state of Florida. Nothing like a couple hundred full-autos opening up, all at once. (OK, after awhile, it gets boring compared to SMG competition, but...)

Sorry for the short hijack. I look forward to meeting ya at Malabar on Sunday. But just remember that Florida is full-auto heaven, with events all the time. Now that you own NFA, it is your duty and your mission to make it to every one. ;)

sofltodd, you will need a shotgun but never fear you can borrow mine or someone elses. I will be bringing my Benelli M1 Super 90.
We usually have one bay set aside for "testing". You are required to get a range officer to standby while you shoot anything FA. Not a big deal. A bunch of guys are RO's and are happy to watch you.

Tony K, yes now that we have this events forum, I was planning on mentioning the Hernando shoot later.
The Hernando shoot is the best MG shoot in the state but it is noisy and you don't get a chance to really interact with other shooters. It is great to see some of the "bigger" guns.
I've competed in the first Hernando SMG shoot. Only 3 competitors including myself. It was only one stage. Nothing like the Malabar shoot which is really top notch.

Amphibian thank you again for your generosity. As far as the hernando shoot we should start a new thread I this forum and see who else is interested. I'm down for anything fun just about anywhere or anytime. Thank god we don't live in Florida where its hot and humid as hell in the summer time that would really be nuts... err... scratch that. New England flash back ignore that.

Do any of you have the specifics for the Hernando shoot like date, admission etc... for a post? I'll add it to my list of stuff to buy ammo for. Hopefully by then I'll have been approved (knock on wood) and I can bring my own fun.

I will be showing up with a good friend of mine who is also SMGless and shotgunless. What are the chances of us both being able to use other peopels guns? We would be more than glad to clean the guns or help out however we can in return. That offer falls short of putting on a Uzitalk.com labled speedo swimsuit and sponge washing your car amphibian so scratch that off your list of things to get pictures of for the forums.

In any evet I look forward to meeting you guys this weekend. We may actually cruise up that way on Saturday so we can be there on time in the morning. Any suggestions on lodging in that area? Ill see what google says.

Ok, I created a new thread for the Hernando shoot so no more hijacking... this means you TonyK :D

Sofltodd,
I think TonyK is planning on coming up at least a day early also. I don't know where he is staying. You may want to PM him and find out. I live about 1-1/2 hours away so I don't know the area all that great myself.
Sounds like you guys are both pretty green to FA. I would highly recommend that you both shoot my full size UZI. I think the MINI may be too much to handle for competition. For just throwing a lot of lead downrange its great, but it takes a lot of practice to get proficient with it for competition. I have mine tuned so that I can get singles out of it but when the pressure is on, it is even harder to get singles. You will have a much easier time with the full size. Of course you are welcome to try out the MINI and use it if you like but I think you will be better off w/ the full size for now until you get your own MINI and get some more trigger time on it.
Since both of you don't have SMG's or Shotguns, I'll see if we can all be in the same group so that you guys can use my shotgun.
You guys do have your own pistols w/ holsters don't you?
We usually split up into two groups so the whole event moves faster. We have I think 6 bays. Usually 4 or 5 bays are setup. Team events are not the norm like its going to be this month. Normally you only have 1 shooter shooting at a time per group so its not like I will be using my shotgun the same time you will be needing it if we are in the same group.
Did you guys pick up any ammo yet? If so what kind?
Also get some shotgun shells. I am using the Remington 1-1/8, 7-1/2 or 8 shot. The Golden looking one.

amphibian,

Green would be the color yes. We have pistols and holsters. They are our carry pistols though so nothing fancy for competition just our day to day carry guns. I have a glock 26 and a s&w 3913 TSW and my friend a glock 22.

As far as ammo I have maybe 1k rounds of winchester value packs here which I routinely run through my glock and S&W and 500 rounds of UMC which seems to be inferior in my glock. I have not purchased any shot gun shells yet but plan on it today or on my way up there Saturday.

As far as the FA vs the MINI I am willing to try anything but I trust your judgement as far as using the FA for this first time. I know the rate of fire on the mini is that much faster and by all accounts that much harder to control.

Thank you for the offer to let us use your shotgun. If we need to pick one up we will. I do not want to put you out at all and i'd hate for my extra shots through your to affect your standing in the match.

If worst comes to worst we do not have to compete and we will enjoy being there just the same. In either event I plan on doing a write up on what a new shooter should expect when attending as well as other observatons + pics.

Todd,
Don't worry about it. Since this is a "special" match AND it is a "Team" event, I am not taking it too seriously. I am considering it a pure "fun" match.
I want you guys to participate and have some fun!!
See you guys there!

Amphibian, Tony K and soflasmg....

Thank you!

I had an awesome time today at the shoot and it was a great pleasure to meet you guys. Thank you for your generosity in letting me use your guns and your patience in answering my many questions. I have never had as much fun as I did today shooting anything before and I have never met as many skilled and friendly people in one place at one time.

I left here yesterday with no Uzi trigger time having never competed in any shooting events. Tonight I have this nice little 4th place finish ribbon, one hell of a sunburn on the back of my neck and an ear to ear grin. Thank you for making it possible. I look forward to seeing you guys in the near future.

I have the pictures which I took up on miniuzi.com in a hidden directory until you guys review them and OK them to be published. I'll PM you the URL.

One awesome memory... Thanks,

- Todd

sofltodd,
I'm glad you had great time!!
Please come again.
If you don't have your MINI transferred to you in time, you are welcome to use one of my UZI's again.
