This is probably the same 87% of people that would in some way say that the gun itself is responsible for a crime committed with it, rather than the individual holding it.

Part of being a responsible parent is NOT sheltering your children from things in life that may injure them,.. rather teach them either how to avoid these things(and I'm not talking guns here..I'm talking things like rattle snakes, black widow spiders, cliffs, rotten tree limbs, drunk friends driving cars..ect) or teach them how to use such items like power tools, automobiles, parachutes, fireworks, boats, jetskis,("""" GUNS""""") in a responsible and safe manner, so they can enjoy them but recognize fully, the huge responsibility that goes with operating or using such items.
Kids that have "accidents" with guns can directly blame their parents for not educating them properly. And parents, you can blame yourselves...not the rest of the gun owning public.
If its your kid....you teach them..or deligate the instruction to a responsible and trusted or certified third party, but ultimately YOU are responsible for YOUR kids until he/she is not a minor.

These parents that are in denial need to pull their head out of rectal defilade and get their kids to a gun class and a shooting range ASAP. Take the mystery out of it, take the drama out of it, take the taboo off of it and educate these kids to use and respect the awsome irreversible power of a firearm. We all will be better for it and they might find that their kid enjoys shooting enough to compete or at least they'd know where he/she would be on any given day or evening...the range!
I'm so glad I had a father that took an interest in teaching me how to shoot and older brothers inlaw that would take me shooting with them when I was five and the were 20.
I've done the same, taking my stepson, and now my grandchildren out to shoot. I'ts all education, isn't that the mantra of the left? Well education means a complete education, as broad as possibly can be provided when they are young, then let them steer a course to specialize in something they enjoy when they get older.
Myopic education as a child, creates a myopic thinker as an adult.

You make some great points and I think this is the general message Masaad Ayoob alludes to in his primer about gunproofing your kids. They MUST be involved in all aspects of the firearm and not just shooting. I have used this book with great success in the bringing up of my 7 sons. They ARE involved. If they shoot then they clean and maintain and help DAD put then away. They are told regularly that they are an important link in the chain of this sport. Ask permission and you can look at the guns with DAD. Involving them to such a degree has totally removed their desire to get into the guns with their friends when I am not around. The facination is gone to get into them on the sly. Looking at a gun is like getting a loaf of bread out of the drawer. They have a healthy respect for the guns ability to destroy yet still appreciate their beauty and complexity.:D

I have never read the book you referenced, but can see from common sense that its the right thing to do.
It is quite obvious to me that the people who would rather eliminate the gun altogether would never consider such an action as it would be harmful to their agenda. They are not interested in really saving childrens lives as they pretend to be...or they would do what has been proven to work!
They want to instill yet more fear and mystique and anxiety into the masses to try and justify their true agenda of taking lawful gun owners guns away.

They want some other way to blame society for their shortcomings as parents and what better way than to belie the evil gun in the process.

Its truly refreshing to hear your story of your kids. I congratulate you and wish you and your boys continued success.
Continued reinforcement throughout the years is important, realizing there is an age variation in them. I envy you and your relationship with your sons.
I did the same with my stepson, and now with my grandchildren.
This spring, they get to shoot my machineguns. Filing the 5320 this week so I can bring them with me.
Keep up the good work!! and the same to your boys.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It has been a long journey and is far from over, heck they will always be my little boys no matter their age. It has been rewarding to watch them grow into well adjusted young men with strong well founded opinions. Even though our opinions often differ, atleast with the older boys, may lock horns a bit but more often than not we agree to disagree. The younger boys have NO choice while they are living under my roof. I am DAD and Soverign KING of all the land as far as the eye can see.
My boys are living proof that kids can be "gun proofed" and brought up with a healthy respect for the firearms that are in the house. Every boy and young man has working knowledge of all handguns, long guns and 2 of them can split a bad guys breastplate with a long bow and arrow from 20 yards.

A word of warning to the bad guys in the world...if you want to live to see tomorrow, skip my house!!!!:D
