View Full Version : Any of you guys have your Mac converted for sten mags?

I was thinking about getting my Mac 11 converted to use the pile of sten mags I have... the Zytel cobray mags seem a bit touchy, and the steel mags I have even more so. Plus I have a ring loader for my stens, so they're a breeze to load.
I know Craig over at Tactical Innovations is considered one of the best to do this conversion, but since he's not taking any work at the moment I thought I'd ask around and see what people thought.
Oh, this is my first post here, I have to thank Mario_FAMOInc for pointing this place out to me! :D

Craig did mine & I am very happy with it. The only problem I had was that Sten mags do not like steel case ammo. The MAC itself will eat anything.
I would do it again.

I was told to buy Recon Ord. steel mags for my M11. They work great and the feed lips are very robust. You do have to modify the lips if you want the stock to go in and out but they are nice....
What steel mags are / were you using?

Craig did mine when it was NIB, while I was waiting for the F3 to go through. Runs perfectly and I have a lifetime supply of mags (50+) that cost me about $100 total. OK, the fact that at the time I could buy STEn mags for $2 ea. in quantity may have affected my judgement....
I also like the ability to run 50-round Lanchesters, and 60-round BustOff mags.:D

Ya, it's me. Haven't seen you in a while, you think you're going to make this months DBS?

To be honest I don't know who made the steel mags I'm using, I got them in trade for some AR mags. They work, but not 100% and I want the gun to go bang every time.
I really wanted to get in on your thread about the 'can lock'. Shame it went the way it did.

You would be happy with the Sten Conversion, but I rather have the orig config.
Some mags don't let the round out of the mag soon enough and that causes a jam. I've had to file the feed lips on a few mags so the rounds would leave the mag a little sooner. Not much filing though.... I'm happy with the Recon mags and the few dozen I have work great.... Even a few of my M10 Grease Gun mags needed this...
Can Lock thread I started 02-25-04 ! It came back from the dead and it's sure dead now.

I was going to have my M11/9 converted to sten, but I found out I don't shoot it very much....I bought a hand full of the recon mags, he is a good guy to deal with....
So far I have been sticking with the plastic mags...I don't shoot it a lot and break a box into 25 per mag, so it never gets over loaded...But it has been flawless even with the macjac!!!

I just got 5 more of the steel mags from CDNN, after they lowered their price to $12.99 - they are exactly the same as the Recon Ord mags I have. They are a pain to load (moreso than the the zytels), but no worse than sten mags. I shimmed a sten ring loader to use with them.
I've also got 5-6 zytels with the steel lip inserts that I use. They work great for 2-3 loadings after cleaning, but once they even get a bit dirty, it quickly goes south - seems like there is barely just enough spring pressure to feed, and once you through a bit of extra friction in there, that's that.

One more vote for the Recon Ordnance mags that Jerry Prasser sells. I had about a dozen of these mags and only had one with issues and Jerry cheerfully and promptly swapped it out for a new one. I also had half a dozen of the factory Zytel mags that I never had a problem with. Both of these mags fit and functioned just fine in my gun. When I looked at shipping, insurance, and the price of the STEn conversion as opposed to "enough" standard mags, it didn't make economical sense to me. The 50 round Lanchester, (sp?), mags are no longer plentiful or cheap as they once were, and that would have been the primary reason I'd have had the conversion done.
I'll be at the match this Sunday, but I'm unsure about the DBS next week. We also have the Cross Roads Of The West gunshow this weekend, and maybe we'll see each other there? Glad you found us here!

Contact Sam at Practical Solutions (www.practicalpage.com), I am trying to get my dealer to send mine there while it is waiting. A local fella had his done, all positive, so I e-mailed him, got it set up so I could pay labor and return ship to dealer.
Sam also does a Uzi magwell on the M10-9 that uses double feed mags.

After about 6,500 rounds (it was NIB to start with) I cracked the weld on the rear of my grip where the grip meets the frame.
I spoke with Craig back in early July about having him do a Sten conversion to my M-11/9. Although his website clearly said no more Mac work, he told me to send it in to him for the conversion job as I did not need it for a couple of months and was not in a big rush for it.
I thought that was really nice of him. I am still waiting for it to be done and returned to me but I can't wait to try out a 50 round Lanchester mag in it when it does arrive!
So, you might give Craig a call and see if he is interested.
Though I just read on Subguns that he is no longer interested in doing these conversions and wants to focus on other work.
Good luck with getting the job done and let us know what happens!
