Guys I've deceided to build an semi-auto UZI carbine from the above. The machine work and welding is no problem for me - it's following all the regulations. I have a new respect for dealers now!
I have the list of 20 items from BATF section 178.39. I understand that I can use only 10 imported parts from that list. That seems possible but I will have to buy more parts that I thought.
My parts kit is a cut SMG. As Dave pointed out on another post that short barrel will be illegal. Is the U.S.A made 16" barrel for $75. from D&D Sales a reasonable deal? What about the bolt? Can I modify either it or the receiver so the rifle will only fire semi? The trigger group is for select fire. Can I use it if the rifle is configured to fire semi only?
Sorry for all the questions but I didn't fare too well on another board asking for help. One fellow did direct me to you guys though.
if you need to by a semi lower or a semi bolt I have them for sale they are original IMI from my model A in the black painted finish.they are in excellent condition. mike

I am not much of a help on the semi build....If you are diligent on the searches most of the questions are answered...
Other than that......ask away...Normally you get a pretty quick answer around here....
You can put a semi bolt in or modify the original bolt....The original is an open bolt design and cannot be used as an open bolt semi...kind of illegal...To easy to switch to a full auto....
One thing that you do need to do is put a blocking bar in the back of the reciever. It is used to prevent the use of an smg bolt....If you go to modify your bolt to use you will need to convert it to closed bolt operation and cut the groove in it to clear the blocking bar....Gov regs....
At least on the lower you can weld it up so that the selector cannot be made to go into the full auto position. But the bolt still needs to be modified...
Hope this helps....

Here is a pic of the different bolts.... http://files.uzitalk.com/reference/pages/bolts.htm
I know you said the machine work doesn't bother you...But it is kind of a balence you need to work out...how long to do the job right vs cost of the finished part.

Jeff, you might want to check the article in the library about converting the Norinco UZI. You can see it here. (http://files.uzitalk.com/reference/pages/norincoconvert.htm) It has some good info on parts counts.
Parts kits aren't a great supply of parts for a semi-auto. You can convert the bolt to a closed bolt setup but you still have to supply the striker/firing pin.
Semi-auto barrels to run quite a bit more than an SMG barrel. I'm not sure if $75 is a good price or not. You could call Vector and see how much they'll sell them for when they get more in stock.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Mike, if you get a chance you might e-mail me with just what you have and the prices. I don't know if we are suppose to sell stuff on this forum. I've only been a member for about 30 hours!
I wish I had found this board before I started collecting parts. I'm sitting on 2 Group Ind 80% receivers and 2 IMI SMG cut parts kits. I'm thinking of chucking the whole project.
Thanks again for the info.
cbxjeff, please check your email. mike
