View Full Version : .22 kit problems

My .22 kit jams in full-auto about once a magazine. It appears that the shells sometimes jam up against the left side of the extractor. Take a look below for a couple .22 rounds that jammed. I cannot make it jam in semi-auto, no matter how fast I pull the trigger. I've tried several different brands of ammo and Remington Golden Bullets jam the least, but they still jam.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

How many magazines do you have?
I have the 20rd and two 28rd mags. One of my 28rd mags jambs like that, kinda like the bolt rides over the .22 shell and jambs it at an angle as it tries to feed into the barrel. Might be that the magazine locks in a little to low, try pushing up on it and see if that helps.
How many rounds have you fired through your kit? From what I can tell it takes 1-2 k to break em in. Boy do they get dirty too, disassemble and clean the mags good also.
I'm just working the bugs out of my .22 kit also so maybe sombody with more experiance could chime in.

I have 3 28s and a 20. I haven't shot the 20 at all, but I have the problem with all the 28s. Guess I should try the 20 next time. Mags were cleaned and well lubed before shooting, so I don't think that's the problem.
The kit has about 1.5-2k rounds through it.

One person from subguns.com stated that they placed a "shim" between the aluminum bolt body and the steel firing pin block (for lack of better words). This causes the fixed firing pin to ride lower and catch more of the rim. Also, one thing I've experienced. If it's cold outside (30/40 degrees), I have quite a few feeding problems like yours. But when it's warmer (or if I shoot indoors), the problem disappears. Also, you may want to check to see if there is upward movement of the bolt. Maybe the top cover is sitting a little high and allowing the 22lr bolt to ride higher? Just a few ideas.
The following is from Jeff Lawrence (FFL/SOT/NC) who had posted this on subguns.com:
I have found 3 things that will put you on the right track.
1... clean and DRY lube the mags.. They come with some kind of damn grease in them that is sticky and hold all kinds of fouling.. I use Alcohol to clean and degrease the inside of the mag, follower and spring. I then use Brownells Action Magic II to lube the inside of the mag, feed lips, follower and spring plugs. This is a 2 stage lube that ends up dry and will last a long, long time.. In a pinch try Hornady 1 shot dry lube, moly powder on a patch or graphite... just be sure graphite is applied with a swap and does not cake-up.
2... Try Remington Vipers.. every kit I have seen runs these nearly 100%
3... When I get my mags fully loaded I turn the loading tool around and pack the nose of the bullets down 2 or 3 times.. this seems to level them off and prevent "nose-up" jams. I have also found that it seem to work better if you lock the bolt back prior to inserting a .22 mag... it seems that the bolt riding back over the full mag will flip the nose of the top round up sometimes.
If those 3 things don't fix your problem then look elsewhere, but I suspect these will help.
FYI.. in 2 kits I have personally tested.. CCI and federal ammo.. several type of both brands failed miserably..
Remington Vipers, yellow jackets, subsonics and Golden bullets worked very well as did Winchester Super-X round nose.. VIPERS were the clear winner though..
HTH.. your mileage, opinions and results may vary..

The fella you refer to posts as "SWEDE" at subguns. This guy, judging by the kind of stuff he is into and does, he is a GENIUS.
I tried to post his Vector 22 page he did, but would not take file here, too big. I'm about sure his e-mail is swede@5bears.com. The 5bears web site is pretty cool, kinda get lost in there reading all the stuff/tests he done on home built radial aircraft engine (model aircraft).

Try this ...
1st clean the oil from the magazines
2nd use winchester super x hv lrn with the
22lr recoil spring
3rd take your time loading the magazines and
turn the loading tool around and push down on
the front of the bullets like posted earlier
this worked for me :)
