I know there are some extremely talented people that frequent this board and I need some help with FNC sear install. I can't locate a local host that's already been converted to get the measurements from so any and all help would be appreciated.

Only trust the FNC if Curtis Higgins at S&H does the sear install!

I disagree. There are many good smiths that are capable of the install. I wouldn't tackle it myself, but it's not that difficult.

I stand by my statement to contact Curtis Higgins...

Heaven help us if anything happens to Higgins since he's the only person that can properly do the conversion. If I were Higging I'd go up to $1000.00 per conversion since I had no competition. I guess he's already aware of this since he's raised his prices to $600.00 per conversion. We have a ORF host gun incomming so we'll have all the specs at that point. I'll let you guys know how the non-Higging conversions turn out.

I think you've missed my point here. Curtis has probably converted 95% or more of all the FNCs in th registry. Iowned one of these, so I'm not talking out of my ass when I suggested that you give him a call and see if he can fit you on to his schedule.

His remark is nothing short of great, and not only is the lower refinished after this, it's a feature any future owner will probably want on his gun. You take a $2500+ gun, drop a 3,000+ sear in it and yet think that $600 is too pricey for his conversion work?

The bolt must be notched in the correct place for the sear. Cut it too deep or incorrectly and sure, you can reweld it and try again, or maybe you can find a replacement. If you do, expect to pay big bucks for a new one. Why take a chance? The area between the mag well and the trigger group where the sear fits must be milled away. No biggie, but I'd hate to mill away more than was needed and possibly compromise the structural integrity of the gun. Then there's the sear hole itself. I'd bet that Curtis has a nice jig setup that holds the receiver firmly in place to correctly drill the correct size hole in the precise place on the receiver where it should be. Yep, you can weld up both sides of the receiver and have another go of it if you don't get it right the first time. I can't remember if it's the selector ot hammer that was modified or maybe it was both. I'll try and check with the guy I sold it to and see if I've left anything out.

Quality comes at a price and his is $600.00. You are correct that there are many good 'smiths who are capable of the conversion, but I'm unaware of any currently offering this service and I'd be curious to know what their price runs for the same job with remark, (including the three round burst), and refinishing the gun. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out and who you find to do this for you. I know you'l love the gun when you get it converted!

I do know that he remarks the lower for the 3 round burst pack, but last time I checked $600.00 didn't include the burst pack. I also didn't know they he completely refinished the gun.

My gun came remarked for the 3 round burst pack. It was included NIW with the gun just not installed. The cost at that time for a burst kit was around $200.00 IF you could locate one. Curtis remarks the lowers with the 3 round burst and full as part of the conversion and refinishes the lower whether you install the burst or not.

Here's a photo of me with a rare AK5 upper on the gun.
