As the subject line suggests, why is this the case? If almost all the internals are exactly the same as the AK and you get 5.56mm AKs with straight receivers, why does the Galil have an angled magazine well? It couldn't just be because of the round taper difference as the Valmet also had this angle and it was a 7.62x39 rifle?
It was developed by Gangsta's, so you wouldn't have to turn it sideways to look cool..

The first Galil's were initially made on Valmet receivers.
You'd have to ask the Finns as the Galil is heavily based on their Valmet/Sako RK62.
Is the magazine actually angled, or is it just the front of the receiver is angled externally? I would assume the external angle was done to reduce weight.
Original AK47s w/ milled receivers look to have a more severe angle to the front than the stamped AKMs do... I don't have access to a milled AK47 to compare in person, but the AKMs do appear to have slightly more angled upward mags than do the AK47 milled versions... Effectively, AKMs have angles from rear to front of receivers while AK47s, Valmets, and Galils are just from mag release forward.
Feeding more tapered cartridges like the 7.62x39, you can probably get away with a less ideal feed angle, especially w/ fmj rounds -- hp, sps, etc, might cause feeding issues if striking face of barrel...
With straight walled cartridges like 5.56 and 7.62 NATO, that angled mag well (front higher than rear) is pretty much required for proper feeding. If you look at the Valmet, the 7.62x39 versions appear to have mags similar to an AKM angle. However, the cant for .308 and .223 versions appear to be much more severe. While they can probably modify mag release, mags rear locking lugs instead appear to have been adjusted to correct feed angle...
