Steel case ammo through a Galil?

    Hi All
Anyone know of any issues with using steel case ammo in a Galil? I am thinking that seance its close to a AK in design there shouldn't be an issue. I know that using brass case will be better.

    Am I wrong on this?

    Thanks

I don't use steel case ammo in anything, but it's just a personal preference. The Galil is fine with any in spec ammo.

Depends. Is it a Century Galil? Check the chamber. Is it dark or bright and shiny? Many of the century barrels were parkerized inside and outside. Which makes the chamber a bit tight/rough. The easy fix is polish the chamber with abrasive paste till its bright and smooth. Now it will love steel case ammo.

My jeff-miller build I normally use steel case in.

I have found Wolf to run perfectly. Tula not so much as the extractor tends to shear off part of the rim and doesnít extract.

IMO unless you reload, brass cased ammo isnít necessary in AK actions

No Sir, I wouldn't wast my time with another Century build. So the gun in question is an IMI Galil.

    Thanks

Jeff Miller has told me that any proper Galil barrel should run steel fine. After all its a modified AK setup. I do shoot brass through mine as all my 223/556 is either Wolf Gold or PPU. Might stash a case or 3 of wolf steel case 223 away for my Galils though while its nice and cheap

You CAN , but you could also have sex with an ugly woman.
The question in either case is simply WHY???

I occasionally ran steel case thru my Galils, and ran about 100 rounds thru my Ace with no problems at all.

I've put over 700 rounds of Wolf steel cased ammo through my Ace with no problems. Flawless.

If your Galil can not run steel then its not built properly. Not saying brass isnt good or bad, but really it should run anything you put in it. If you run brass though it and reload then you know Galils will leave a nice ding in the neck on extraction.

The only problem I have had is that some of the primers are seated too deep causing a failure to fire .

I agree with Sniperdoc. No steel case in any gun I shoot. Unless I am doing CQB training or QR drills I shoot match ammunition. I always train with what I would deploy with that way poa, poi, and perceived recoil are always the same. Just an opinion.

What about barrel erosion due to the bimetal jacket? The results with bimetallic .223 ammo in an AR were not so good based on the Luckygunner.com test from a few years back and another site stating that the steel below the thin jacket is exposed after passing through the barrel.

Sure, it will cycle steel case ammo. But, will the bimetal jacket actually wear out the barrel a lot faster?

I plan on running some steel through my Galils once I finally get them built. Generally the only time I use steel case ammo is during the winter when I don't feel like chasing my reloadable brass in the snow.

With a chrome lined barrel I seriously doubt it.
