The Luger and the P-38 are both good guns in their own ways and times. The Luger is probably the all time classic pistol. Nothing feels as good in the hand or points as naturally as a Luger and is one of, if not the best looking pistol ever made. Every one I have ever shot was very accurate despite having a mushy trigger. The Luger is a pistol that would be too expensive to make today. It was all machined and very tightly fitted, beautifully polished, and blued making it labor and machine time intensive. These are some of the things that led to it's demise as well as it's sensitivity to dirt in combat. It's replacement the P-38 was a better combat pistol. Cheaper to make, less sensitive to dirt and crud.
I never quite liked the way a P-38 felt in my hand and I was never able to shoot one quite as well compared to a Luger but if my life were to depend on it I'd take the P-38, otherwise give me a Luger.

PO8 vs. P38
They aren't even in the same league. Both my Mauser P38 and Erfurt PO8 are nice, matching guns. There is close to a 30 year difference in production dates, and whereas the PO8 looks like a hand fitted and hand built pistol, with great attention to detail, the P38 looks like a typical "mass produced" handgun, complete with mill marks.
I enjoy shooting the P38 (which has many features that were copied by present mfg. guns), but the PO8 is a "work of art"! |

Have owned and fired both P-08 and P-38. Terrific pistols both, design, workmanship, you name it.
I vote P-38 because the grip to barrel angle on the Luger doesn't quite fit my hand, the P-38 does and I am more accurate with it. Also I have always liked the P-38 drop hammer safety system but never have it pointed at something when putting on on the safety.. |

I used to collect C&R LUGERs, P.38s, BHPs & at one time, had a Shansei Arsenal .45acp Broomhandle with QD stock/holster.
I'm kind of partial to the venerable Walther P.38... errr, U.N.C.L.E. SPECIAL OPEN CHANNEL "D" ![]() ![]()

I have to agree with this opinion. I've never owned either, but had friends who did, and some with multiple examples. I've always marveled at the detailed workmanship of the Luger. Absolutely amazing. And always explained why they're so damned expensive, even with the poorly-made ones. I can buy a P-38 today for way less than $200, but I know they'll never be collectible, but they're good shooters. I always loved the looks of both guns, too, but I don't think I'll spend any money on the P-38s available to me. Besides, if there's one think I don't like about the P-38 is the fact it ejects its empties toward the LEFT. I paid extra to have a reserved space on the right side of the range. On the other hand, it might be cool to have a gun that spits hot brass on the people who are constantly pummeling me with it! Allen |

P-08/P-38
Preference previously posted but one thing leads to another, high priced ammo caused me to go buy some 9mmLuger dies, hard to find 9mm brass caused me to go to the gun store where I got 500 range pickup brass for $32
and 1000 jacked 115 gr, 9mm bullets for $79.95... But I saw a little boot sized hideaway 9mm Kel Tec like some of the Highway Patrol carry down around the ankle or in a boot, had to have it. Well let me tell you, it shoots, pretty straight , too, but it spanked my trigger finger just a tad, haha Now I know why my P-38 with its weight is like sitting in a rocking chair in comparison. Forgive me for slightly getting off on a tangent... |
