Semi OT: AK vs. M-16 on Lock and Load
On the show last night, R. Lee put an AK-47 and an M-16 up against each other in full auto. I have a DVR so I ran one part over and over again to make sure... on the high speed - slowed down shot, the AK's barrel seemed to bend or flex up and down when fired.
The M-16 stayed rigid. Is this normal? Did I have too much wine? Last edited by Badacid : 10-24-2009 at 01:45 PM. |

Golly - now I'm gonna have to sell off all my AKs 'cause they're no good. And here I thought better than a half-century of battlefield use had proven their ruggedness and reliability. Darn! Yeah...right. ![]()

Did you see the one a couple of weeks ago on shotguns? Did you see the Browning Auto 5 double on the gunny? I slowed it down like you did to make sure I saw it correctly. I cant believe they didn't edit the malfunction out. They kept showing it over and over like no one noticed. Maybe they didn't, but I am sure others saw it too. |

Haha. It is a little concerning. But doesn't bother me. At least the AK will work while the M4 is being repaired. Gunny had a Supermatch stainless M1A in the Marine Corp Camo Mcmillan yesterday. What a beauty that rifle is. Does the Galil flex like the AK? I would assume not as much. Curious. |

I saw the same thing. I also noticed he couldn't keep it on target unless he was burst firing. Now I really don't want one.

A Galil or any AK with a solid receiver will not flex like the stamped receivers do, The AK variants usually have chrome lined barrels which are not designed for accuracy but will shoot all day long. My Galil clone with a new Green Mountain standard rifled bore is as accurate as any Ar-15, whereas my Saiga223 will not group at all well, but if need be will probably outlast me.Lots of variables to consider, threaded barrel, pinned barrel. etc. I've seen Saigas that shot less than 3" groups, but mine and most others shoot less than 4" groups.Long ago before the dawn of time I qualified as a sharpshooter, now I can only shoot that well from the prone position, kneeling and standing up I feel good if I hit the target...Old age has silently crept up on me, my closest friends are Arther Ritus and Di Abetes, and a charming couple they are.

The flex is from the gas piston/bolt (which is not perfectly concentric) slamming back to cycle. Being that Galils have the same mechanism as AK they will also have similar flex. Physics is a bitch when it comes to a gun you think highly of.

In regards to accuracy, chrome barrels may have a very very very slight disadvantage compared to non-chromed barrels, I'm sure no one shooting an AK would be able to notice. Chrome advantages overweigh this concern.
Milled receivers do not flex. The Chinese 1.5MM AK receivers should not flex either. |

Then my Tenngalil Micro build and my Norinco Type 56 should be OK. Whew! I'll try not to worry too much about the lasered Draco. It's just for close-in work anyway. ![]()
