This cant be good lol

I just noticed lastnight, everytime I charge my AR (colt SP1 lower and colt factory Bolt) I get a very very light strike on the primer!! Now I am not sure if this just started or I just never noticed it before...hummmm

So basically when i charge my weapon...and then end up not shooting it...the top round that was chambered and now removed, has a very light but very noticiable strike mark on the primer.

Any ideas why this may have started happening??

Thx

not really looking for a slam-fire version of this gun lol

All AR's do that due to the floating firing pin. You just never noticed it before.

Sounds like the rifle is defective beyond repair. Send it to me and I will make sure that it is propperly disposed of.

Cause that is how it was designed in the 60's by Stoner. The firing pin is free floating but not heavy enough to set a round off.

perfectly normal with all AR/16 platforms.

when the bolt strips a round the way it chambers causes a very light primer strike.

no worries.

Yep, free floating firing pin. I do not care for that myself, but I make it a habit to never chamber the same round twice. Doubt it will go off, but i'd much rather be safe, then sorry.

If it makes you nervous, you can get a titanium firning pin. They're lighter, so they don't impact the primer as hard when they are striking from inertia alone. However, as everyone else said, it really is a non issue.

If it makes you nervous, never think about owning an SKS. Many military firearms have free floating firing pins.

So you throw away any cartridge you don't shoot?

I read on another site that rhymes with "barfbomb" that a police department was having failure to fire with TAP ammo. It was supposedly traced to rechambering ammo over and over, which broke up the primer compound cake in the primer. Just to be safe, after I chamber the same round a few times I strip it and throw it in the Beta dump box. Never had one fail to fire, though.

Also heard they are more likely to slam fire after multiple chamberings. Not sure if that's true either but they can slam fire from my Beta all they want.

Perhaps you misunderstood; I do not rechamber the same round. I will cycle it back into the magazine. That way when I load the firearm for home duty im taking extra caution in prevending a ND. When shooting, or at a range, it doesnt matter if it goes off then. Better safe than sorry.

No worries unless you are using winchester small rifle primers. Do a web search, they are responsible for a lot of slamfires.

Make sure you don't have the early profile firing pin. If you do, buy a replacement. Check this: http://www.fulton-armory.com/SlamFire3.htm

Oh. Gotcha.

Your technique being different from mine caused the confusion.
