You seem to be missing the little spring for the barrel nut catch. The top cover catch spring is the big one in front of the lower in the pic.

If you can't get it out, a set of used guards is not at all expensive. You can get used ones HERE for 10 bucks or new ones for $21.00

That's what I did. Kept the keeps and sliders and used a nylon sling for a M16A2. Plenty of length now. The IMI sling I got awhile back was too short to be of much use.

If you burn or grind bakelite you will instantly know it... the smell is horrific.

I have the bolt you are talking about in mine. It's simply a semi bolt with the bottom lip intact. They are also used for full auto closed bolt setups. As long as you have the FA setting locked out by welding a nub or washer on your lower you are good to go. THIS is like what you're talking about.
