I am competing in my first subgun match in a few weeks. I will be using my 9mm Uzi and have been told by others that the 9mm sometimes has trouble knocking over the larger steel and bowling pins. Will I be better off using 147 grain loads or 115 grain at a higher velocity? I will be reloading the ammo for this event. I have plenty of 115 on hand and would have hunt down the 147. Any help from subgun veterans would be appreciated.

Personally, I like 124 grain as the "best" all around match ammo. Bowling pins aren't a problem unless you have to clear them off a table. If that's the case, then bigger is better and I'd go 147 grain. Poppers can do a slow fall using 115 grain ammo. Multiple shots placed high on the steel work best for neutralizing these targets.

The most important thing is to have a load that will function 100% in your gun, 100% of the time. The Uzi is a perfect gun for a subgun match and you'll do well. Try to relax and have fun. Slow is fast.

Another thing to think about is the bullet drop. If you sight in for 115, the 147's are going to hit lower, so you'll need to adjust for that. Although I am a total novice, I shoot factory 115's and reload 124's. My son shoots the factory loads and I shoot the reloads. I figure if I have a bad round in the reload batch, I prefer for it to happen to me. Anyway, the 115 and 124 shoot about the same so I don't need to compensate for the heavy 147 bullet.

The nice thing is that the Uzi pulls singles really easy, so if you shoot 147's (accurately) , you'll probably use less ammo.
