Congrats on the gun.
What Cal ya get to start?
I've always left mine in 30-06 since I am still loading and shooting pull down componets from when Klinton shut all the Mil. bases down.
Lots of black tip AP, FMJ, and tracer pulls, left to load up thanks to buying pallets of the stuff.
23k seems like a great deal with the extras you got.
I see belts going for 100+ in good shape and more for NOS along with some linkers costing more then some new handguns.
Again seems like a decent score.

I go by the same user ID on 1919a4 and FalFiles but I only have like 5 posts on 1919a4 and about 20 on FalFiles I'm more of a lurker on those two forums.

Do yourself a favor and look hard for someone that will mentor you on the gun before you haul it out to start running belts.
Learn how to set timing and headspace, disassembly, cleaning, difference in the boosters, how to handle malfunctions, etc.

Start buying parts now. They are getting harder to find just like most older MG’s. Back when you could buy complete kits for $300-400 you could keep tons of spares.

When I got my 1919 way back when, I was lucky to be able to spend several days over a period of weeks with an OLD time Class 3 guy that could take the gun apart blindfolded. He coached me on all the details of the gun before it ever hit the range.

His original comment to me was “remember, a 1919 will hurt you, a M2 will kill you!”

And know, a 1919 is a “crew served” weapon. They get to be a PITA by yourself!!

Don’t know if he still does it but Dan Shea use to run classes on belt guns. Not cheap but you gain a lot of knowledge on the gun.

You can time it in a pinch with a 1/8th drill bit.
Or crank the barrel all the way in and out a turn and a 1/2
That's emergency field timing but you will probably never have a wave of N. Koreans trying to swarm you so just get the proper timing tool.

You can stop a runaway Gun by grabbing the belt and giving it a good twist.
Doubtful you will put enough ammo through it at once to have a cook off though just due to ammo prices.

You fire the gun by lifting the trigger up not pulling it back like a traditional firearm. Takes a bit of getting used to.

You can put spade grips on the 1919 but they were never made for or issued to the gun during it's Mil. life so not correct.
They are great though with a tripod & scope of some sort.
There are also free plans to make spades on the net if you like to make things and just doon't want to spend the 450.00 + for a set.

Also there are a ton of USGI & Gov. manuals on the net for it.
All worth a read or print out.
Utube is the same way tons of old WWII training vids uploaded.

Already covered the rod of death but it can never be mentioned enough.
