I have the chance to purchase a Saiga for a crazy low amount of money (guy needs cash NOW), so I’m thinking about chopping it to 8”. I had the chance to shoot an 8” Tromix couple years back and fell in love with it for the only reason it was cool as hell and the fireball it spit out was amazing. Yes, I could search for a used Tromix, but I’m going to pay a premium and rightly so, but that kind of money I would rather put else where. So, how hard is it to chop one to 8” and get a reasonable amount of reliability out of it, or is there someone making them for a reasonable amount? Thanks

It's crazy hard to get that gas system figured out to give it to run reliable. Tony has definitely got this. Down pat....worth the money for the conversion, plus welding skills to do the handle if you want that look

I'd suggest shooting out a bit before you cut it down. Some people just don't like them because or reliability issues. And yes you have to move the gas block back etc.

For what it's worth I had a saiga and I have an sds imports linxs 12 and the china knockoff is a direct copy, more reliable, and was only 400 brand new

Sds gun shoots lowbrass cheapo bird shot and the saiga never could either for what its worth

I THINK 13 inches is the magic shortest barrel length you can go without moving the gas block.... and still maintaining some reliability

Just seeing this now.

I have a 10 inch I did myself 100% reliable with the 3 dram wally world 23 a hundred.

I also got a lot of advice from TROMIX over on the Saiga forum to do the cut down and did all the mods myself.
I also took a good flaming from those asshats while doing it accept from TROMIX he was very helpful at no cost.

I also have a well tooled out shop.

Did you know a 19 inch S12 will just fit between centers on a 54 inch bed lathe?
It was how I parted the barrel off to 10 inches.

We call it the Russian farmer.

There are pix of it here on UT in other threads.
