After looking at a M16 upper that used AM180 drums i got to thinking why no one has done this with the Mac??

i would think it would be very cool to toss drums on top of a Mac

ive wanted a AM180 for a while, but due to poor reviews i dont want to get one....is it possible to make a AM180 upper for a Mac?

Richard Thompson and Craig Wheatly made them but they were not approved by the ATF. Todd Hill made one from an inverted Lage 22 kit and sold it. A few others made them but never posted pics.

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

That's not bad; only one jam during that run. I'm guessing Stingers for the highest velocity/momentum against the steel targets?
The AM180's I've shot often had one or two jams per mag, but with .22LR it's almost always the ammo.

It ran the best with Remington Golden Bullet bulk ammo. And yes, clearing a jam couid be a a challenge and is the biggest deterrent to producing them. Sometimes they cleared easily and other times you were stopped hard.

I really wanted to build some one-offs for people, but the cost to reliability ratio was too high. $800-ish in parts alone. But the best part was that the 22 kit would run in the 180 upper AND an OEM upper.

If anyone wants to make one for themselves, just ask and I'll be glad to explain how I did it.

The AM-180 was the reason that I bought my Macs. I was very disappointed when I found out about them being denied. I would be very interested in how these are made. I might be able to draw up some of the parts in Solidworks for the project.

Possible as a private person? Yes (but not tested in court) -Make for personal use, enjoy so long as you don't hit radar.

As a business option currently approved by the atf for resale? -No.

There is this AM180 upper that is (or was) available for the M16 as well.
http://www.tacticalinc.com/am15-upper-receiverbrfull-auto-capable-only-p-420.html

there is one for sale on sturm or subguns right now...$2000 ...id grab it, but i dont want to swap out lower guts every time i want to shoot it...if all it took was a different upper id gladly pay $2,000 for one...$2,000 is much less than $13,000 for a AM180.....i suspect none of them worked well and thats why they dont exist anymore.....im still hoping someone comes out with something similar...i think there would be a market for a $1,000 AM180 Mac upper....

This. Component cost is the barrier to lots of uppers.. if MG-34 parts weren't over 2k now I'd build more of those.

It'd be reasonable if the unit were absolutely reliable, but as everyone knows, 22 conversion kits can be very picky. You really have to accept that with this set-up.

A less expensive option (although not nearly as cool as a full upper) would be to find a Bazooka Bro's drum adapter. I've got one for the Uzi, and I've seen them for the M16. I don't recall if they ever made one for the M11. But I would think it should be possible to get one and adapt a Lage .22 mag for the tower.

They made one for the M11 using a Lage 22 mag for the tower. I bought one - works pretty well.

...and the BB drum adapter/ Lage M-11/22 is much faster to clear a jam. I liked mine and had a lot of fun from time to time. It just made the m-11/22 need cleaning more often.
