The Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel Television Networks are sponsoring a new shooting competition called American Marksman. A range I shoot at started promoting it and I thought I would give it a try. The first level, local competition, is in .22 LR.

I messaged the event on Facebook and confirmed that the IWI/Walther UZI in .22 LR meets the guidelines of their event. So, I am going to use that, because --- UZI!

I didn't think to ask about the earlier IMI .22 conversion kits.

Anyway, I'm going to give it a try. If anybody else wants to use an UZI for this, maybe we can give our favorite firearm a good showing, or even share our UZI-only results.

Here is my range report following local qualification shooting the IWI/Walther Uzi .22 LR.

Prior to the event, I discovered that the .22 Uzi frequently fails to chamber with Federal Target ammunition, which seems heavily lubricated to me. It ran fine with Federal Premium and CCI, both of which don't feel lubricated at all. At home, I also had no problems with Eley Match, which seems lightly lubricated on the bullet, but not the casing.

American Marksman is a 50-round, 2-target competition (25 rounds per target). I finished the first target, but beginning with the first string on the second target, was unable to chamber a round after multiple attempts. The nose would hit the feed ramp, and the casing bend. Eventually, the judge and I decided to call it a day. So, since every unfired round (that would be 25) counts as a miss, let's just say the final score is nothing to write home about.

Lessons learned:
I think my worst decision was to allow myself to be persuaded by Eley's fine advertisements to use Eley Match, even though I knew the Uzi didn't like lubrication very much. My second error was to only have the one magazine that came with the gun.

Still, it was great fun, friendly people, and the first time I ever really shot the .22 Uzi.
