Chris @ KNS emailed me recently regarding a picture I had posted of my 9mm M16 setup. He said I should REALLY upgrade my Gen 1 KNS pins to the Gen 2 Mod 2 set. He said to see him at the upcoming (Jan) S.H.O.T. Show in Las Vegas. I picked up a set of the Gen 2s and came home and installed them ASAP. Chris offers this upgrade for only $20... CHEAP insurance for RRs or any AR/M16 lower. Just a heads up.

Ive got sets of both, i fail to see why the "upgrade" is needed. Both are good products.

Did he give you a reason why he was recommending the "upgrade"?

Gen 1s have been know to break, un-ramped bolt 9mm uppers most often the cause. Gen 2 Mod 2 much stronger. Ramping still recommended. RR holes can get egged when pins are broken. Chris will probably come on here and correct my answer. I hope.

Some of the pins in the earlier models (mine included) were breaking at the oil hole. This occured because the oil holes were drilled thru the threaded section of the pin which weakened the pin there. KNS moved the oil holes a little further inboard and out of the threaded area. No problems with mine so far.

Yeah, seems a little strange to say you should upgrade if they don't explain why.

John, You are correct about the oil holes in the trigger pins. We also made the Hammer pin solid on all of the Gen 2 series pin sets. They are over 40% stronger than the Gen 1 pins. The Gen 1 pins are already stronger than the stock pins. We recommend anyone with an running 9mm or a Registered M-16 to upgrade. We gave away the upgrades for almost 2 years before we had to start charging for them. Email me if you have any questions.

I thought the Gen 1 pins were to prevent what they are saying the Gen 2 pins are for. Does Obama make these pins? My Gen 1's have been used for thousands of rounds. Anybody have one break yet?

been using the gen 2 pins for the past three or four years. the gen 2 hammer pin is definitely stronger than gen 1 hammer pin. less hardware & no threads in the hammer pin. only issue i had was i had to radius the underside of the retaining pins near bolt release in order fit flush next to the mag well. since i use a lighter hammer spring for my 22 upper this keeps the trigger pin from walking when shooting 9mm & .223.

We had 14 breakages. 13 in 9mm 1 in .223 suppressed. All have been covered by our lifetime warranty. We gave away thousands of upgrades for free. We had to stop because people were getting the free upgrades and then trying to get us to send out replacement trigger pins to get a free complete set.

I think if you talk to the people that have dealt with us for years, they can vouch for our integrity, honesty, and customer service. You may feel that those things represent Obama, but I respectfully disagree!!!

I received replacements for both my sets. My few dealings with KNS have been pleasant. It is unfortunate some took advantage of the replacement program.

No matter how much testing you do something can happen when the product is placed into production and installed on such a variety of guns. There is no way to test for every gun, cartridge... combination. What matters is how the company responds to it.

I think I learned of the upgrade on this forum when they were first released, possibly from one of VegasSMG's posts.
