Finally a nice weekend and with life getting back to normal I had a chance to run out to the range to try the production .22 bolt in my Vector Mini UZI. At first I tried shooting it without the buffer in the receiver. I was shooting it that way with the prototype bolts to slow it down. With that configuration I was having regular failures to feed and eject due to insufficient spring pressure. I put the buffer back into the gun and it was a completely different story. Ran like a top after that. I shot Federal bulk back, Remington Golden Bullets and CCI Mini Mags. All worked great. The Federal and CCI resulted in reasonable rates of fire. I wasn't able to time it but I could easily shoot doubles and occasionally singles. Very reasonable for a Mini UZI. The Remington Goldden bullets were a different story. They are very hot and ran much faster. Not much fun shooting .22 at that ROF and I will definitely avoid the Remington stuff with this kit. I was very happy with the kit. Great job Troy!

For magazines, I tried the BDM mag that came with the kit, a Vector mag with a BDM spring kit, a regular Vector mag and a Group Industries mag. The BDM mag was a pain to use the first few times. Occasionally a round would stick in the mag and the stack of bullets would not pop up. But after loading them a few times they seemed to get better, both in ease of loading and in feeding. I suspect it was a glue issue that so many people have run into. I'm happy with the functionality of the mags. The follower was trimmed short when it arrived from Troy. I have not made any further modifications to it. All of the other mags worked fine with the bolt, as long as I ran it with the buffer in the gun.

I wonder why everyone has great luck Federal bulk pack stuff, BUT me.. I still can not get the Fed bulk pack to work worth a shit in my gun. They all hang up in the mags.

Federal Bulk Pack vs 22 conversions

Hi Mike,

I've found the Federal Bulk Pack to have a very weak recoil impulse to operate the bolt. In my guns, I have to use a greatly reduced recoil spring for them to run well. This slows the cyclic rate but I'm good with that. You mentioned that they jam in the mag? If this is a bolt going down on an empty chamber try switching your gun to semi. I was having an empty chamber problem at one time and was blaming the mags. As it turned out the bolt was not going back far enough to strip a round. I found this out by shooting in semi and when the empty chamber failure occured the bolt was not locked back on the sear. This might not have anything to do with your problems but I thought I 'd just throw it out there.

BTW, after a good cleaning and lube none of my BDM Uzi mags worked with any ammo today. It wasn't much fun in the match. Oddly the same ammo worked just great in BDM skinny 32's in a 16/22. Maybe instead of working on the BDM Uzi mags I should work on a grip that could use modified 16/22 mags. (The ejector would be missing among other things but who knows.)

Good Luck,

K2

I wanted to post a follow up to my original post and try to get some help. My kit runs pretty much 100% with CCI blazers and the 22 spring that was provided. However, I am having a problem and a question:

1. While the kit functions 100% on full auto if I go through the entire Vector magazine (I haven't been able to get the BDM mag to work), if I try bursts, it will do a burst, but when I go to fire another burst, the bolt slams closed but no ignition. I can see from the back of the unfired 22 that there is an indent but apparently not enough to set it off. If I reload the 22 in the mag and go for another burst, it will fire, so it isn't that the 22 is a dud every time this occurs. As I stated above, I am using the 22 spring, but I am not using a buffer. Maybe RoverDave can chime in, but I don't see how to get the buffer off of my 9mm spring. I merely placed the spring into the recess in the back of the receiver without any buffer, since that is how the kit came.

2. With regards to the Micro, Troy can you post on what needs to be done to the kit for functionality? My Micro is currently having her trunion opened up for the bolt with feet, but others have commented that some alterations are also required. Since others will likely want to use this kit in their Micros, it may be best to post exactly what needs to be done.

Thanks!

I'll get you a spare fiber buffer pc, Typically in the mini's you should have a 1/4" black buffer already in the gun (at least that's what I have been told) and I thought the micro was the same way.

You can try the kit with the 9mm spring, rof will go up and it might not cycle the Federal but Blazers should work OK.

Lets do a basic alignment test.
1. Put bolt and barrel in gun (no recoil assy)
2. Set selector to FA
3. Squeeze trigger and "rock" gun forward and back. Bolt should travel freely and line up with the barrel with no resistance.
4. Insert mag and repeat #3 (follower may cause drag)
If this all works, you should be able to run great.

On the mag, check the height the mag sits in your magwell and how loose it may be. The top of the mag should be flush with the top of the 9mm ejector. Check it against your other mags. Also see if there is forward to rear slop with the mag locked in place.

Having the trunion opened up for "feet" is all you should need to do for the Micro.

Troy,

I rechecked the alignment (I did this when I first received the kit) and everything looks/works perfect with the Vector mag (I haven't had time to work with the BDM mag). Any other ideas? I did get it to do a couple short bursts today, but then it failed to fire when trying the 3rd burst. Maybe the buffer will be the answer because I am clearly getting a strike on the back of the bullet, it must just not be enough. However, and maybe someone with more physics knowledge can jump in here, I don't understand why it doesn't seem to have this problem if I do a complete dump.

during a dump you are holding the sear out of the way completely.
during a burst the last cycle of the bolt may be just clearing the face of the sear, but riding the top of the sear, causing just enough drag to give it a lite strike...fix is a stronger recoil spring/buffer to overcome the drag. Also, check that your sear doesn't have a "lip" built up on the contact edge with the bolt, caused by the metal being pounded and raising a "lip" on the top contact edge of the sear. Remove with a file or dremel, and polish the top smooth, but just enough that you don't feel it anymore...you don't want to change any angles.

.22 conversion review

OK, I am one of the folks who had to wait for the latest kits because I wanted amy barrel threaded. I finally recived my kit and ha d a chance to play with it. I am currently using a F/A Vector Mini. I popped the kit in and with the modified BDM Mag supplied with the kit, the conversion ran very well with all ammo except Federal Bulk pack. (I used Remington Golden bullets, CCI, Remington Std velocity) I was able to pull singles, doubles and bursts. I did not have any other issues as mentioned by joshuap just posted above. The Federals worked, but they were obviously underpowered and failed to completely recoil enough to strip a new round, so I had a few failures to feed. A lighter recoil spring MAY correct that issue. I did NOT have a buffer of any kind. When I tried the same ammo with my other BDM Mags, they are definitely binding and will need to mbe modified to sit lower in the magwell. I will also have to use the dremel to make room for the 9MM ejector. It is interfering with the mag seating properly.

FWIW, I did use dry lube in the BDM Mags to avoid any issues with the rounds feeding.

All in all, I am very pleased with the performance of the .22 conversion in my mini. I will repost once I have made mods to my remaining BDM Mags.

By the way, the unmodified BDM Mags do sit high in my Full size F/A Uzi....hopefully, the mods will solve that issue in that firearm.

um...., you're welcome.

But I didn't do anything. Threads pop back to the top automatically when someone posts a new reply on it.

I thanked Dave because the thread did not show up a week ago when I looked so I asked in another thread if the 22 mini kit review could be posted so I can hopefully get my kit running. The one time I tried to shoot my 22 mini kit it did not run, I spoke with Troy once and I did not wish to bother him unless I needed to, he seems to be a very busy man. I have found most members in this forum to be helpful so I check here first. If you have some advice on how to get my Mini 22 kit running I am all ears. I have found this forum helpful in the past with questions regarding the Uzi weapon system so I make a point to thank the people that help me and I make no apologies for it.

I have been dealing with some legal issues after the death of my father and health issues of my own over the past few months. Gun projects have been put on hold, like the mini Uzi 22 conversion kit that I waited nearly 2 years to get and attending the Uzi Talk shoot which I missed to name just a few. I have found some free time and would now like to get my 22 kit working so maybe arch or Troy could give me some help with that.

Now back to the thread in progress. My kit no workie, it will not strip rounds from the mag and if it does it gets light primer hits on what it does chamber. The modified mag is level with the ejector, and the bolt is in alignment and slides smoothly in and out of battery with the top cover removed. What now gents?

Good to hear from you Troy, "What happens with the top cover on?" with the top cover on the bolt will only go forward in full auto only "loaded or unloaded". When I try to fire the gun with CCI Mini Mags most of the time the bolt just slams into the back of the round and will not strip/feed the round or ignite/fire the round. When I look down from above with the top cover off the top bullet in the magazine looks aligned and strait but when it tries to feed it goes in crooked and slams into the side of the barrel. BTW this is a IMI dealer sample gun not a Vector.

Any way to see a pic of this?
Cycle the bolt 4-5 times with no ammo on FA and check for marks on the top of the bolt, and let me know.
