It is my understanding that yes the barrel is extra heavy with the heavy duty hand guard. It also has a special front sight base/sight. The hole in the FSB is higher so the gas tube is straight and is also twice as thick as a standard gas tube so it can handle more sustained fire.

From Freedom Ordnance's description their is no gas tube.

"Disintegrating link blow back belt fed only system."

My bad. I thought the discussion was still on the FM9.

So I got the call from Josh with Freedom Ordnance on Tue, telling me he had reached my name on the list. I told him I wanted the 11" bbl and ordered an extra belt bag and links. Brown dropped off the box containing my FM-9 yesterday (Fri) and since we had a rainy day today and I couldn't do anything outside......I decided to open everything up today to explore this new piece of kit.

My initial impression is this is a high quality piece of hardware that is well engineered and well thought out. This finish is so consistent on everything, I actually put a magnet on some of the belt feed components to ensure they were steel.....they were. Being a RDIAS guy, the RDIAS/rear lug fit is important......and it was spot on. The upper attached perfectly.....although I did notice the hammer must be in the cocked position for the upper to rotate closed on the lower. One other item of note is the belt feed stud on the bolt carrier is NOT the plunger type......so the bolt carrier will need to be locked back in its rearmost position anytime the top cover is closed.

Quick change bbl system is a slick design......and fast.

Links....linking is not quite as smooth as with a bottle-necked case. I linked a belt-bag's worth (150rds) in a little less than a half of a college football game. AFAIK, linking by hand is currently the only option and with the straight-walled 9mm case.....case/link alignment is important before the link will accept the case being pushed into it. After you get the hang of it, it's not terribly difficult.....I put on a pair of thick nitrile gloves about halfway through the 1st box of ammo to avert a blister. Linking ammo for this system REALLY needs to be addressed......as hand linking is a slow and often painful process. A plate linker is required at a minimum IMO.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the engineering/quality of the system and feel it's worth every penny. I can't wait to do a range test.

If you have kids, strike a deal with them to link for you!
(If they link "x"# rounds, they get a New video game, etc)
You'll be amazed at how many belts of ammo you Will have!

I can't wait till they come out with a 22 belt fed upper!
That would be SWEET!!!

(& YES,rimmed cartridges can work with belts. The Russians have been using them over 100 years.)

I had a lakeside razorback for my RDIAS and the idea of a belt fed 22 was a lot cooler than the application. Having messed with several rimfire options for MG's it's almost more trouble than it's worth.

^ If I ever threaten to buy another .22LR conversion for anything I own, somebody please kick me in the nuts and stop me. At the match today we were talking about the Razorback and other M-16 conversions and a former owner piped in saying he wouldn't pay two hundred bucks for one.

I was able to examine a Freedom Ordnance 9mm beltfed upper today. It's cool, very well made, and ran well, but I'm still not sold on a 9mm belt gun.

I'm just saying that a 100% reliable 22 beltfed would be sweet.
It could be cheaply shot all day long, it would be gentle(r) on barrels, parts,&pins;no need to reload brass; could be used in (most) back yards w/o alarming neighbors, etc.
I know most 22 conversion kits leave something to be desired,& if I'm upset when a $350 gun w/ a !100 conversion kit jams, I'm sure it's worse w/ a $20k gun!
But most people shoot 22s for fun(aka it's cheap, quiet,& convenient), not as a first choice self defense weapon. I feel NFA weapons fall in the same category. (I've never heard an MG owner say " The reason I bought my Machine Gun is to defend my family."(Or to kill zombies,or to defend against Martian invaders.)
Maybe it happens. I don't know.
Anyway, I'm not trying to hijack this thread.
I'm just saying (I THINK) a reliable 22 belt fed upper would be great;& I hope enough of you agree with me to get a manufacturer to try it.

A .50BMG Belt Fed upper would be awesome, but I'm sure no one would want to put it on a transferable lower!
Maybe w/ a semi&Slidefire(or equivalent) stock?
The recoil may destroy the lower, but if you can afford to feed it, a $75 lower shouldn't break the bank!

I have toyed with that idea as well, but the $1500 price tag for the upper put it on the back burner. Is your LMG upper the closed bolt version? I assume it must be for it to work with the RLL.

What is so different between the closed bolt LMG upper and a standard upper, other than the extra heavy barrel and handguard?

The thickness of the gas tube. You can run the hell out of them. Own a couple and 89lx is right...much better then messing around with an ARES. I wasted untold hours 'tuning' links and testing ammo. My LMG uppers and Betas just RUN until you're tired of shooting.

Get: KNS spade grip and an MG42 tripod for even more fun.

Nice! :)

I think I might run mine in our local subgun match this month. Any advice/tricks to know with the nutsack? How many rounds can you load into it?

It loads 150, Otherwise it is simple and works.
