Broken bolt question

The bolt on my M-50 broke. Prior to the break it ran flawlessly. I purchased two new bolts from Numrich, neither fit, both being slightly to large in diameter. Took one and carefully and slowly worked it with very fine emery cloth, steel wool and polished until it seemed to fit. Test fired and it would only fire one round in either full or semi. Next I checked the firing pin. That was fine. Replaced all the springs with new. Now I can get it to fire semi pretty well, but couldn't get it going in full. I noticed that the rear of the bolt appears to not be tipping upward into a notch or groove in the top of the receiver when in full battery. I suspect that somehow the bolt is not locking up in full battery and this may be the problem. Perhaps the rear of the bolt needs a little touching up or the bolt is still a little bit to large in diameter.

Anybody else replace their bolt with a new one? Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

I really miss shooting it.

Thanks

I have two of those bolts as well and I too have noticed that they are a little large. I'd get some calipers and using the old bolt try to determine what parts of the new bolts are too big. Is the locking notch out of spec any? I have not had to replace my bolt but wanted to start working on the new ones just in case. One is fairly close in diameter but too long and the other is larger in diameter. I think the calipers would give a pretty good clue what your problem area it. Good luck!

Thanks Texasvwnut. I'll have to take a look at the length. Never really thought about that, I guess because I was so surprised by the diameter being to big. It makes sense though that it could be to long. That would prevent the end of the bolt from fully engaging in the notch in the top of the receiver. If that isn't it I'm going to find someone to send it away to fix. Although I have some experience in working on firearms, having built a 1911 and some M1 carbines, this might be better left to an expert. As I've read, there was some hand fitting that was required right in the factory. This might be what they were doing.

Good luck on finding a Reising-smith. If you find a good one let us know. I think you're on the right track. You may be closer than you think to finding a solution.

BTW, where did your bolt break? Can you post a photo?

I could see a fireing pin break, but the bolt on the Reising look fairly robust, is this kind of breakage due to wear and tear/overuse, or is more of "just happens"? I have heard that a bolt breaking in most firearms is due to metallurgy issues, was this ever the case with the Reising? PM

The bolt broke in the rear at the notch where the action bar engages. It basically broke the notch right off to the end of the bolt. This appears to be a weak point and if the bolt is going to break, this is where. Probably just fatigue over time. I will try to post a photo when I have time. I have received a recommendation for a smith from a person very knowledgeable of Reisings. I hope it is not to much of a hassle to ship it out. I believe that I can do it directly and get it back directly without any additional paper work, etc., but I need to check and be sure.

On the Numrich site I see they have two bolts listed for the Reising M50:
21130A
21130B

What's the difference? They are the same price.
