Building a Gatling gun.

I'm gonna start posting some pictures as I go and hopefully in the end I'll have a working gun. If all goes well maybe one of you guys can build one too. The design isn't the original Gatling design cause I have some blue prints and can't figure them out worth a shit so I'm gonna go with my own. This will be a .45 auto caliber with barrels of about 30 to 36 inches. This will be the second one I've built and a lot smaller than the first one (12 gauge).

First off, I'm starting with the rear end of a Whippet car. Bust the hell out of it and salvage the gears for the crank assembly. One large gear and one small gear.

Next, I'm taking a 6-5/8" pipe and trueing up the ends. This will be the cam which the individual bolts will follow to feed, fire, and eject. One end will have a plate with bushing on it and the other will be later cut to form the cam rail.

The plate is trued and a shoulder cut on it so the bushing will be perfectly in line with the 1" mandrel which will go through it later.

In the pictures I'm cutting, trueing and cutting shoulders.

My lathe is a 1911 LeBlond 16 by 42". You have to swap out gears for different speeds and threads. Pain in the ass but one hell of a nice rig.

Here's tonight's work. I faced off the inner drum which will have the 8 bolt carriers and bolts attached at a later date.

I bored and trimmed down the plates that will seat on each end of the carrier barrel. One plate has the larger gear welded to it on the outside. (sorry for the shitty weld but all I have is a Lincoln 225 stick welder) The gear plate was faced on both sides and stepped to fit on and inside of the carrier barrel. I had to hone the inside of the larger gear cause it was too hard to turn down with the piece of shit bits I have.

Some more of tonight's shit. The last picture is of the bolt carrier drum with the end pieces affixed but not welded yet. I'll spot weld it and try it for fit when I slide it onto the 1" mandrel that goes from one end of the gun to the other. I'll have to measure the distance of the larger gear from the rear cam plate to drill the hole for the hand crank/small gear assembly.
