I saw this picture in news this morning too. I thought that's a beretta. The gun was also in the original red dawn movie. What shocked me is that I thought the gun was a dated gun and seeing it in France.

MP5's are dated guns and most special police units still use them ;)

Hey Ulwembu, have European police units started the transition to rifles from subguns? Here in the US, the vast majority of police groups have dumped the MP5 for AR pattern 5.56 guns. More owies for the bad guys and less over penetration.

LESS overpenetration? I would think a 5.56 bullet will fly easier through a body then a 9mm?

No. They tumble or fragment depending on bullet design. Pistol-caliber stuff tends to punch right through. Hollow points are great when they work as designed, but sometimes the front cavity gets plugged up and acts like a FMJ.

Well, I doubt they can use 5.56 softpoints or anything that disintegrate. The police over here uses solids that only get a tiny bit larger then the original diameter before firing. Stupid rules and regulations.
5.56 FMJ's suck when it comes to knock down power. We experience that time and time again in our matches.

You should take a look at some jello shots. 5.56 FMJs usually cause extremely devastating wounds at under a couple hundred yards, far worse than soft points and far more lethal than varmint rounds. Knocking down a plate is different than causing a wound, the former is purely a matter of momentum. I can knock down a plate with the poke of a stick or a gently tossed soccer ball.

5.56 soft points generally cause the greatest penetration. 2nd place would be an FMJ round at low velocity or with a thick jacket so that it does not break up. Most 5.56 FMJ is very fast and somewhat fragile.

All of my amateur ballistic tests conducted in the 1970's would support your theories. 5.56 = major overpenetration. What has changed since then?

Talking to some guys from Aberdeen Proving Grounds they still use MP5's for their Special REaction Team. BUt I believe they said they were hand me downs from someone else. Though I think MP5's are still in supported in the supply chain DOD wise so it's still useable .

We don't only shoot plates. We also shoot bowling pins and I can tell you that 8 out of 10 hardly move when shot with a 5.56 FMJ round. Stories from the battlefields tell us that 5.56 rounds mostly wound and don't really stop the other party unless hit in vital areas. There's a reason why we saw the M1A's come out again ;)

Over penetration is why we still see SMG's with police forces. Box of truth is fun but obviously a body doesn't consist of multiple plywood sheets :p

Anyone POSITIVE it's not a Stemple? They are being built into everything from S&W 76s to Tommy Guns to HKs, including one like the pic! Just a theory!

I've shot many pigs with a 223 that ran off, so far, most shot with a subsonic 9mm 147gn were DRT (100yds or less). Most sheetrock and plywood I've shot, never moved. much.

Pretty darned sure.

Think about it: Stemple built tubes/guns for the US recreational shooter market. The French government is going to be able to buy from any of the big manufacturers. No offense to John Stemple, but a European country isn't going to arm its police / military with guns from a small independent shop.
