carbine adjustable buttstock

OK, I like your advice, and, I am lazy.

I am looking for a carbine adjustable buttstock that doesnt rattle and locks up tight.

Any suggestions, preferrably from experience. My buffer tube is mil-spec.

There are many good ones out there. I have Vltor, Magpul and Sopmod stocks. I like all of them.

The rattle/play between the receiver extension/buffer tube and stock can be taken out with a small "loop" piece of velcro with a self adhesive backing. Just cut a small piece and attach it to the receiver extension/buffer tube under the stock. No more rattle. The velco's size depends on how much play there is between the stock and receiver extension. I normally place the velcro on the radius where the "tube" turns into the adjustment rail that contains the adjustment holes at the bottom.

Thanks AZ Doug. Do any of the stocks have a compression lock instead of or with a pin?

I got a new Sig M400 and the stock is closer than most and it is not possible to put a piece of velcro loop on the tube. Too little clearance. But still rattles.

I have a Magpul 93B, a CTR and Ergo F93 that have compression locks. The M93 is the predecessor to the Magpul UBR. Magpul considers the M93 a prototype, but they sold so many of them I do not know how it could be considered it a prototype. The Ergo F93 is the Magpul M93B with a standard carbine castle nut attachment. The M93, F93 and UBR are heavy stocks. The CTR is relatively light weight.

I have a Vltor Modstock that has very little rattle when in the closed position. I really don't notice that rattle when I'm shaking it but can feel a little movement by hand. I also have a Colt (I think) on my XM clone that is tight as well, but I'm not sure if it is commercial or mil spec. I can check when I get home from work if you want.

I second this.....even the MOE stocks that don't have the lock are pretty rattle free. The CTR is especially nice if you want the lock for complete movement free shooting, say with a scope, etc...

Can't go wrong with either.

Hands down the magpul UBR is my favorite AR stock. It is a little pricey and heavy, but well worth it.

I guess the field has been narrowed, by consensus, to Magpul. The question that remains is the CTR or UBR.

Both lock solidly in place without any rattle. The CTR is the lighter of the two. The UBR is heavier but has storage compartments, that are removable. Both have a different cheek weld. If your cheek weld places your cheek on the stock instead of the receiver extension then the CTR should be fine. If you cheek weld is where the stock meets the receiver extension, or slightly forward, then you would probably like the UBR cheek weld better. The UBR stock does not encompass the receiver extension, it rides on a rail along the bottom half and that is what creates the difference in the cheek weld. I like the cheek weld and heft of the M93B and UBR for range use...but for everyday carry as a duty weapon I like the light weight of the CTR.

OK. How about the ACS? Would that split the difference between the CTR and UBR? It has the better cheekpiece, longer LOPm, and fricion lockdown like the others.

Just to throw in my :2cents here, I owned or used the mix of stocks mentioned. I would also like to add the M4SOCOM stock from ACE. I think its a great platform and well made. If you want to stop the rattle altogether, put on an A2:laugh:laugh

I have seen the M4SOCOM and liked it, but went ahead and ordered the ACS. It looks like a good stock.

I used to have a CTR but every time I fired, the friction lock would come undone and then it would rattle around until I re-engaged the lever. Guess the little bit of recoil was too much, or maybe I just got a defective unit?

Ended up replacing it with a LMT SOPMOD. The SOPMOD fits very tight on the tube and requires 2 hands to adjust the position. It's inherently a tight fit and doesn't need a gimmick like a locking lever, which might come loose under recoil.

I'm happier with the LMT, it's a simpler design and there's less that can go wrong. Hopefully Magpul has fixed the friction lock issue in their newer stocks like the ACS. I think mine was one of the very first run of CTRs.

I got the CTR on both my AR15 and my LR-308

Rock solid, on both.

+1 I too have a Crane/LMT SOPMOD stock. I like my VLTOR stocks just as much as my SOPMOD at a much lower price. The little bit of play/rattle in the VLTOR stocks does not bother me. Recently I have been using CTRs and they stay locked, even on my .308. They are a great stock, in the same league as the more expensive stocks like the Crane/LMT SOPMOD.

To the OP, I don't think you can go wrong with the ACS. Let us know how you like it.
