First attempt at crowning=CHATTER

I bought one of these Brownells tools...

...and used the correct pilot with cutting oil, but I'm getting chatter marks.

Probably uneven pressure.
It's harder by hand than by machine because speed and pressure are wildly inconsistent.
Keep trying, use more lube than a covey of porn stars, and never spin the cutter backwards.

Hand tools are crap for this kinda work. Lathe works best. Dont try and correct it with that thing, you'll just make it worse. Send it to me so I can fix it before you really f*** it up ;)

Yeah, a lathe has a lot more power (rpm) and can apply pressure better.

But in all honesty, you actually did pretty dog gone good with the hand tool

You can Smith it out further with a 45acp fmj and valve lapping compound for a mirror finish.
It may take a few more then one bullet head though with that chatter.
