Firepower Magazine May 1985
The Galil SAR by Lee Upchurch

There is a lot of great history info in this one. I particularly found it interesting that the author stated the expensive to produce Galil went to export and civilian needs first so that those sales could fund/subsidize the equipping of Isreali units. And even in 1985 the Galil doesn't appear to have been widely issued, except for frontline units, due to cost. And again, accuracy is excellent for the weapon -- not sure why folks in central america have asserted a lack of that in their first gen weapons...

(And sorry for not getting stuff posted more frequently -- I've been slammed w/ work but do have a substantial inventory of some pretty awesome more oldies but goodies coming eventually...)

Kokalis has a book called "Weapon Tests and Evaluations - The Best of Soldier of Fortune."

In it are a Galil Sniper review and a Standard Galil review.

Yes, the sniper article from April 1987; is the sniper I bought from the EX-GM of Action Arms.

That was the first sniper to come out of bond into the USA.

It is a awesome rifle.

I got the e-copy.

Overall a great addition to our forum and Galil-collecting. This photo catalog is rife with models and variants that are exceedingly uncommon and even unheard of in all the years I have been documenting these guns.

That said, I would have liked to been able to read your observations while handling a number of the specimens featured. There is just way too many questions that photographs alone cannot answer.

I'd recommend this to any folks looking to see some rare variations of the Galil. Not necessarily a starter guide for the beginner, but definitely a piece to have for the advanced collector.

Any suggestions? I try to avoid interjecting my personal opinion, and also want to avoid the "The stock folds to the right", or "the handguards are plastic" kind of text... Or repeat the same info that is in every other book, and avoid the useless figures and weights.

Not so much the weights or basic information, but perhaps some details that aren't so apparent just from the photos? A good example would be the early 7.62 Galil ARM with the bolt hold-open device; any pictures of the internal mechanism? Did it actually function as it should? For the Dutch guns, did the burst mechanism operate on a ratchet-type action or something else? Did you get to handle the ARM FFV-890 (something i never knew existed)?

Again, a very fantastic collection of beautiful photographs. Thank you for posting for us!

I bought the hard cover book; along with the electronic download. Great research and details.

Plus getting the 25 percent discount was nice.

More info to add to my hours and hours of talking to many people across many areas.

Pretty awesome! I like the fact that the author came to UziTalk's Galil Thread to gather information from its members for his book. Great information!

Thanks for the tips.

Allot of it comes from not knowing what something is, and having to research it AFTER the photos were taken. For the ARM, the owner (a Austrian weapons dealer) didn't know anything, just that it didn't take standard Galil mags and that he didn't have one. I had to write IWI..

The burst mechanism, I could not really tell. It was such a mess in there.

For the ARM FFV, I did not. The collection in Sweden that owned that (and the 2nd model FFV carbine)could not let me into the collection due to security requirments, but were very helpful, even doing custom photos for me.
