I'm in the process of 922Ring a Galil Sporter and I'm trying to plan what to do about the folding stock. The gun is new, so ideally I'd like to install a folding stock that looks close to new. Blackthorne has new stocks, but they look like some polymer thing, not the original Galil steel stock. The stocks on Gunbroker look about as rough as I expect an Apex stock will, so I'm leaning towards getting an Apex SAR kit and sending the stock off to be refinished, and ending up with plenty of spare parts.

What coating would best approximate the original finish on the stock? I'd rather send it off to a pro than try to do it myself.

Any idea how Century gets their stocks to look so good?

Is there a better option that I'm missing?

Good? The ones Ive handled looked like they were used for clubs. With couple hours in the shop Im sure a person could manufacture a new one with minimal tooling.

If you buy a surplus kit, you can send the stock off to someone like TennGalil to refinish it. In most cases they can be saved and look darn good too. BUT, you will be dollars ahead to just buy the polymer coated stock from Balackthorne. I have some of each on my Galils.

And the Ace stock does not match exactly.

Thanks

In my experience, the surplus stocks are hit and miss. The pictures of the excessively worn stocks you see with the parts kit is what you can expect. They can be refinished with Gun-kote or similar coating and come out to look nice. What I don't like about mine is it has some play or slop when folded. It locks up tight extended, but because of the play I bought a new one. The polymer coated stocks on Blackthorne are new IWI, and have an aluminum core.

Blazin,
I would just put a real IMI folding stock on your new gun; since it is a IMI gun. I see good ones from time to time around 75.00-100.00 w/ knuckle.
I would wait instead of going the blackthrone route.

I understand your concern, since it is a GS gun after 89"; but since it does not have the "S" stamped on it and it has a model 372 (instead of the 710); go for it.

Just my two cents on your new exciting deal. I'm still waiting for a picture of it.

The "Plastic" stocks at Blackthorne are the later model Galil stocks. Second Generation issue stocks. Got one, looks better, rubber butt pad, what's not to like?

Get a steel Galil stock, even a semi beater that has the knuckle attached and locks up tight. APEX has some for around $100. Egun I think it is has/or had new delron covers that fit over the top tube. Disassemble the stock and abrasive blast it with 70 grit aluminum oxide and refinish with flat black MolyResin. Install new upper tube cover and reassemble. If the metal butt stock end is chewed up, have it milled off or carefully grind flat with a belt sander and install a ACE rubber butt pad (identical profile to the Galil).
All refurbished from well worn looking great stocks at a bargan price.....

I thought there would be one clear answer and route forward, instead you guys give me lotsa great options, thanks.

First off my Centery stock comment was based on my Golani, the stock looks like new on mine and it locks up as tight as can be.

I am all for the route that requires the least amount of work. I continually have at least two guns off at gunsmiths, and I don't like it. So the FAL stocks are a no-go for me, but I do appreciate the suggestions. So the final contenders are either an original stock that I get refinished, or a Blackie stock. I'm leaning towards the Blackie, with the option that if I don't like it I can swap it out with my Golani stock.

Once I'm done I will post pics.

6500rpm -those are nice looking Saiga and AK's. What did you use to adapt the galil stock? Was it a custom rear trunnion?

6500- What is the rail system on the golani/galil? That's exactly what i want. I want to be able to mount some sort of an optic but don't want to do a full rail system. Was looking at a top cover mounted rail system, but the one you have is even better. I assume it stays accurate as the tube is locked down tight once the top cover is on.

thanks, in advance!

Blazin, I sent you an email about a stock I have.

Just some info, Galil stocks are not steel. The tubes & butt pad are aluminum that is epoxied & pinned into the knuckle.
