Burst gun.

I got to spend quite a bit of time w/ it and man is it a sweet rifle.

I noticed that the handguard was fatter than my ARs, and there appeared to be some kind of protective sleeve over the gas tube.

The guy who was issued the gun said that the fatter handguard was a better insulated version, and the handguard did not get hot at all even after 5 or 6 mags in rapid succession.

I want one!!!

Cool, but if I may ask, how did it come to pass that the weapon was available for your drooling over ? I have never been in the service but if I understand it, they don't issue weapons and just let you walk around with them, take them home etc. You sign them out and then sign them back in.

Now I am sure the procedure is different if you are headed up the road to Mosul, but if you are here in the USA, and just issued a weapon for training or guard duty or whatever, don't you have to sign it back into the armory ?

Anyway, you say it was a burst gun - 3 round only ? Is that still standard with all military issue M16 series weapons ?

It was legit the way I was using it etc...

If I told you how I'd have to kill myself or something like that.

I don't know about different configs of this rifle, it was just issued that way (3 rd burst) for this particular agency.

right place, right time.
The range I go to in Sanford is also used sometimes as a training range for the Army Reserve.
I've been out there when they were qualifying w/ their M249 SAW's. They told me it was the first time they had them out and they were brand new. Sure looked it too. Not a scratch on them.
They kept checking my stuff out. I told them I'd let them try one of mine if they let me try one of theirs.... so they let me shoot 100 Rnds of belted ammo.
They also offered to let me shoot their M16's but I already had one so it was no big deal.
The M4 handguards are double shielded so they are cooler. They are quite common. You can get them from many sources.
You can easily duplicate a military config - w/ money.

Joe,
Are those Colt handguards? I just picked up a set from RRA and they only had the single shield and were a lighter color than the set you have. They are the fat style. I would have gotten Colt instead but they are over $60 compared to $18 for the RRA.

Bushmaster $39.00 If you call them to order, ask item if #1005-914-4573 (M4 Hand Guards) have the double shield. They don't specifically say "two" shields.... Their shields are black. http://www.bushmaster.com/electronic-documents/2005Catalogv1/Page 54-56 Hanguards & Accessories.pdf

In the pic, these came with a Colt M4 Upper a few years ago.

Buzzer,

On most posts the sign in and sign out of weapons is standard, but as I understand it now there are some posts that are requiring their soldiers (at least in basic) to keep their weapons with them at ALL times.

So that they get used to it before they HAVE to.
