I swapped uppers on my M11/9 last night, and the guide rods came out of the bolt.

It looks like some kind of pin is supposed to be in the rod to retain it. Anybody know what goes in there?

Paper clip mod @ 3.20 minutes on his youtube link or a 1/16" roll pin.

Cool thanks guys!

I figured it was something simple like that. I love this bolt, it’s the perfect match for my Lage SK upper.

I’m happy to hear you love the bolt. The paper clip mod is used to allow the user to clip coils from the recoil spring to adjust the ROF to suit their individual needs. A pair of needle nose pliers and a paper clip are all that’s required. A spread of about 150 RPM can be achieved with the Super Slow springs I sell along with clipping spring coils.

People often say they’re happy with the ROF of the bolt as shipped, but how do you know if you have no basis of compassion?

I really like the paperclip mod over the roll pin as it's easier and faster to change springs.

If I ever do need to change the recoil rod, I think I will cut down a M11/9 rod and add a E-clip like Lage uses in the 22 kits. It's even easier and faster to change out than the paper clip mod. No tools needed.

Years ago someone I knew on a message board sent me a vise grip that was modified with a pin. It would push out the roll pin easily, so I prefer using the roll pin.

Richard also uses the E clip on his ‘31 series of uppers. It’s a great idea. For most users, removing or installing the roll pin recoil retainer presents a real challenge. Some people have discovered you need a third hand for reinstalling the roll pin. The reason behind Mike’s paperclip mod was to allow easy recoil spring clipping and swapping with common tools and minimal experience. I’m disappointed more people haven’t experienced what the W bolts are truly capable of by clipping just a couple of coils from the spring. It’s so easy and the results are impressive with no reduction in reliability.

Can we buy those from Lage for general 11/9 and A1 use?

I use mine in a SK upper. How many coils should I clip off if I want to try slowing it down a little more?

The e-clips can be bought at any home improvement store. The trick is to cut the slit in the rod. I use a jewelers saw.

Providing it runs 100%, you can clip two or three. I know it doesn’t seem a couple of coils would make much difference, but it’s huge.

Jewelers saw. Hmmm... I bought a hundred pack for six or seven bucks at McMaster~Carr. Because the Lage guide rod is used, I gave dozens away to guys who bought an A bolt and wanted to try it in the MAX-31K. They’re tiny and easy to lose.

Tom,

I finally tried the tungsten bolt in a Max-11sk upper today and was having trouble getting the ejector rod to stay in the hole in the bolt. Is there a trick I'm not using? The recoil rod is long enough that the ejector rod just swings around.

If your talking about the A bolt in the m11/9 Jake, put a rubber band on the back plate of the bolt and around the upper. Then put the rubber banded upper on your gun. Then cut the rubber band and pull out

I assembled a batch of A bolts using a smaller diameter wire, (paper clip), than usual to secure the recoil spring to the guide rod. Some of these “slipped during shipping. Replace with a larger size paperclip and you won’t have the floppy ejector rod problem. My apologies for the failure to identify the problem on my end, but it’s a quick and easy fix with a pair of needle nose pliers and large paperclip.

* This is not an issue with the longer M-11/9 CF-W bolts or a A bolt set up for use in the small frame M-11 or M11-A1 guns. They swallow enough of the ejector rods to not pose a problem no matter what size clip is used.

Tom, I used a larger paperclip and totally fixed this problem. You'uns are very impressive with your crazy good knowledge.

P.s. did you find a new casa yet?

Even though it’s s dimple fix I apologize that I didn’t catch those bolts before they shipped.

Been in the mountains all summer Jake.
Life is good!
