Re: I just bother the piss out of them until they sign

Now, I did renew my CCL license there on the spot so he saw that I was ok. The only thing that he insisted upon was a pay-stub. I thought it was a weird request, but he told me he wanted to make sure I was not a transient. In the end, I got the coveted signature, which was the most important thing to me.

Pay stub??? Thats a new one...

New one for me too

Now, he did make a copy of the pay-stub, but the copy he made was only of the top. The only thing he got was my employer and date of pay; he didn't get gross or net-pay. Again, as long as he signs, I don't care if he has me dance the Hully gully. I take it for face value that he wanted to make sure I was not a transient and so asked for my pay-stub. In the end I am a proponet of Ockham's Razor, and as Ockham said himself: ``entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily''. :soapbox

Got the call from the chief this morning; my signed forms are ready for immediate pick-up! :D

Regarding the suppressor, I think I am going to follow Muzzleflash's advice and mail the paperwork in with a letter explaining my reasons for purchasing one. Thanks to everyone who responded.

Here in Metro Atlanta - we have a number of differences, depending on county. (Metro Atlanta is something like 18 counties now) - Henry county, for example, will pretty much sign them while you wait (as I hear).....

Now I live in Cobb County. The Cobb Sherriff has you fill out an 18 page background form - employment history, address history (10 years of each) - personal (non family) references, list every speeding ticket, etc. and they actually follow through and check it. Every time. I've had 3 processed now, and they called every reference every time - and ask questions like "Is he a member of any Hate groups? Is he pissed off at anyone?" While they take this portion very seriously, they are absolutely incredibly efficient and nice about it. It only took 3 or 4 days (mostly waiting for return calls) and they called me twice along the way to let me know the status, and again when it was finished.

I just need to remember to let my references know that it's coming before putting them down on the form.....

"Hello, this is Lt. Smith with the Cobb County Sherriff's department. Do you know a Mr. Jones?....."

I gotta admit that I've been pretty lucky here. But it is a CIII friendly state.

My last Form 4s I just mailed to the CLEO with a stamped return envelope. He signed and sent them back. Took a total of three days including mail time.

I was a bit concerned on my first suppressor purchase as he had mentioned in a converstaion that I had with him that it was "a bitch" to get "one of those". I think that he meant the he thought that the check was a bit more extensive on the federal level. Don't know.

Anyway, the last four CLEOs have signed off for me without much of a second glance. Might be due to the size of the town and the fact that I am sort of "known".

The current Chief is retiring soon. I hope the next one is as "freindly"

The fingerprinting is easy also. No ink. They have an optical scanner and will print out as many copies as I want. If I go back within a year, I can just give them my ID number and they will print new ones.

I just went down and got my forms signed... Sheriff was out sick... They called the next day to pick them up.... All they want is DOB and SS number...

BTW they do have the scanner but it is in booking in the basement... Where records are they still use ink....

AFIS can't process my fingerprints.

When I went down to apply for my CCW...
it was ink the pinkie time!

Play guitar ..maybe that's it.

I have a long scar on my bird finger. It looks weird on the print card. Most of the time the print taker makes a notation on the form.

I run a CCW and firearms training outfit, so it made sense for me to have the LLC buy the .22lr suppressor. (We use it for training purposes.) In addition to avoiding the CLEO, photos, and fingerprints-- it's also a legitimate tax write-off!

I'll have my Class III as of July 01-- no new purchases are planned until after that time, so the whole Form 4 thing will be a moot point. :cool

...did I mention that I love Arizona?

I stay on good terms with the Sheriff and his deputies. I'm pretty tight with a couple of them anyway. Plus, my cousin is the former state prosecutor and is now the district judge in my county, so even if the sheriff wouldn't sign, I could still get a signature anyway.

Most of the time, my buddy (who is the chief deputy) is the designated go to gun guy anyway, so when I go in, he's like, "what are you getting this time?"

My first time of jumping through the hoops, a different sheriff was in there and he was a hard-nose, but it was for FFL's, and the next time was FFL renewal, then was a SBR, then another SBR, then a silencer, then another silencer, then a machine gun the last time I was in there.

So in total, I've been in there 7 times for gun related things in the last 6 years or so.

In retrospect, I wish I had went the trust route to begin with because I have more NFA stuff than I originally thought I would, but I don't want to make a trust now to transfer them all to and pay the taxes all over again.

I live in rural Texas county. I know my Sheriff well and have been to several of the same meetings with him. Tonight we were at the same dinner function and I told him I was having a Sterling MG built.
He told me to stop on by and he would sign the paperwork. I then invited him to the house and shoot it in my pasture when I finally get it approved. He said sure and proceeded to invite me to their range to shoot it with one of their officers who is a MG owner. He also lives in the country and shoots his .45 in his backyard at his target range.
He's a great guy and is working hard stomping out the small drug dealers and burglary rings in the area. We are blessed to have him.

One reason for owning a can: It's quieter at the range and doesn't bother other shooters or range neighbors or attract as much attention.

My own "incompetent CLEO" story:

When I went to the sheriff for my first NFA sign-off here, he told me that citizens cannot legally own an MG in PA. He advised me that if I wanted full auto, I could "buy a gun magazine, there's all kinds of ads in the back on how to convert a semi-auto to full auto." I had copies of the US Code and PA law and he would not even look at them. I rattled off the names of will-known town and county residents with large MG collections, and although his face clouded over at that point, he was in too deep and could not lose face. So he dug in his heels.

I left the Sheriff's office and went upstairs to the DA whom I know personally and explained what I needed, and he said, "this is a first for me. What do I do?" I showed the DA the code and explained the form and he signed off right there. He later did three other forms for me, no questions asked.

Come reelection time, I worked for the incumbent sheriff's opponent. The incumbent now enjoys retirement.

i've lived in several small towns in my state, none of which have police departments. i've had to use two different county sheriffs to do my sign-offs.

all i've ever done was send in the form 4's or 1's, with a photocopy of my driver's license, a self-addressed and stamped envelope, and a letter explaining what i was doing, that the sheriff is "one of many parties that may legally sign-off" on my forms, and that the certification is simply and acknowledgement that i am not "in violation of any local laws for the posession of said device" to the best of their knowledge.

i've never even gotten a phone call. i send them in. three or four days later, i get them back.

I just make an appointment with his secretary to drop off my paperwork and have prints taken. Once there I hand her my filled out papers and pay $10 to run a background check and at the same time have her take my prints and pay $10 per card and I am done. The CLEO signs the forms and mails them back to me, after 2 to 5 days the signed forms are in my mailbox. Come to think of it I have never actually talked to the CLEO, or seen him in person.

My CLEO's here have never refused to sign a Form 1 or 4 for me. But when I got sicker I just went the trust route so I don't have to leave the house to get it done. They're all a good group down at the H.C.S.O. Once they even corrected a mistake I made and said they hoped I had fun when I got my new toy in. I even let them shoot my MAC 10 and they loved it. They showed me their suppressed MP5 but for obvious reasons I couldn't shoot their's. Thet have 4 SWAT guys one SMG.

I think if it was me and the guy showed me a CHL/CCW I would sign on the spot. Otherwise I probably would not sign, telling him to go get a CHL/CCW.

There is ZERO, NADA, ZIP about having to have a CHL/CCW to have a title II item... You wanting to make it a requirement is just as bad as any Brady or VPC plan.

No problem

Never had a problem, I don't even have to talk to my LEO I just drop it off at his office and pick it up later. Local PD do my print cards, we usually talk about different guns, and what we would like to buy. I do live in a small town and everyone knows all the locals.

You may add the idea of the discreet principle. No noise ability for the comfort of others in the area.
