"Israeli-Guatemalan military cooperation began in 1971, during the presidency of Col. Carlos Arana Osario. Then the Guatemalan chief of staff, Kjell Eugenio Laugerud (who would become the next president), visited Israel and met with Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and other Israeli military officials. Kjell Eugenio Laugerud (KEL) expressed Guatemala’s interest in procuring armaments and military communications equipment. Later that year, the two countries signed their first cooperation agreement, though specifics were not made public.
In 1974, Kjell Eugenio Laugerud (KEL) became president in what was generally considered to be a fraudulent election and he was a General in the Guat Army before becoming President of Guatemala. Just prior to taking office in April, he made a private visit to Israel, announcing his wish to widen cooperation with that nation. The first Israeli-Guatemalan arms agreement was signed within months. In the early seventies, Israeli-made Galil assault rifles, arrived in Guatemala. Which became standard issue for the Guatemalan Army.
What is interesting about this Galil rifle is that it's a KEL. The Guatemalan KEL was a rifle all of its own, dating back in time to the Guatemalan Civil war years. The Guatemalan government was a partner in the economic policies that made life miserable for the majority of its impoverished citizens. It is clear that the force that drove the Civil War for the insurgents in Guatemala was the reality of economic oppression and violence that existed on a daily basis, inflicted primarily by the governing elite. The Guatemalan Government placed a order of Galils to IMI of a new variant specially made by IMI for the Guatemalan Army.
This version of the Galil was specially made in Israel at the request of the Guatemalan Army. This rifle was basically a ARM but they deleted the Bi-pod and the carry handle. They also made this rifle to fire only in a semi-automatic and latter full auto for the Kaibiles (Guatemalan Special Forces). The forward handguards were produced locally in Guatemala by enslaved local Indigenous Indians from mahogany to prevent wood rotting/swelling and is deep red in color. The ancient Indians used mahogany for making canoes because it was excellent for boating purposes due to its water resistance.
The reasoning behind some of these modifications where as follows. The deletion of bipod & carry handle prevented them from snagging in the dense jungle found in Guatemala. The semi-auto version was to force the soldiers from wasting ammunition firing in full auto. The first rifles arrived in the early seventies and were used by the newly established Kaibiles (Guatemalan Special Forces) which came to be in 1974.
Kjell Eugenio Laugerud (KEL) also helped found the Guatemalan special forces "Kaibiles" during this period many of the KEL rifles where modified to the SAR configuration with full auto for the new KAIBILES forces. This KEL Galil was one such full auto rifle which was reconstructed by Two Rivers Arms from a seasoned Civil War full auto era rifle that latter served duties within the Presidential Guard.
This KEL is marked number twenty eight of one hundred believed to have been selected for Presidential Guard service comprised of the most elite Guat Kaibiles. The name "Kaibil" is derived from Kayb'il B'alam (Kaibil Balam), a Mam indigenous leader who evaded capture by the Spanish conquistadors under Pedro de Alvarado. In the Latin American Media they actually refer to this Galil as a KEL.
