I'm pretty sure that you would break your hand(s) or the grip of the uzi if you attempted to "use" the bayonet in the traditional sense (i.e., a downward/upward swipe or a direct, full-force thrust). The bayonet would need to be very, very sharp in order to be effective, and bayonets don't tend to hold an edge very well.

It still looks cool, though.

This makes sense to me. When you do a bayonet thrust on a longgun you grip it like a spear.

Some time ago I read that the intent of the Uzi with bayonet was a guard duty application. Namely, in a prison yard type environment where large numbers of prisoners form a mob that tries to rip down and break through chain link fence enclosure. Such attempts are to be repelled by the guard outside of the enclosure raking the Uzi mounted bayonet across the fingers of the prisoners that are extended through the fence; not by a thrusting maneuver.
