Has anyone actually ever shot one so much you had baffle strikes or the rounds started to keyhole? If so, how many rounds do you think were on the barrel? I'd imagine these barrels should last multiple lifetimes so long as you aren't using +p+ ammo. I have an upper that's got an unknown amount of rounds on it (let's say 20K rounds as an estimate). Would it be recommended to change the barrel at any point as preventative maintenance? Or will the barrel effectively never wear out to the point it will cause issues?

There won’t be a set number by which it burns out. The biggest thing is how hot you get it. If you are in an abusive mood and decide to do consecutive mag dumps over and over and over, you probably could kill a barrel in less than an hour. Otherwise, a pistol-caliber barrel will last a long, long time.

ETA: if you’re gonna lose a barrel, it’ll probably be to something like a squid load, jacket separation, or an overloaded round.

Never burnt a pistol cal barrel. Probably done at least a hundred drum dumps through 1 MAX31 and the barrel is fine. Honestly, on a MAC type SMG you are going to break so much stuff before you burn a barrel.

Yep, lots of other issues in a pistol-caliber gun before you will do anything to the barrel.

While not about the M11/9 specifically, there are some really good writeups by MG rental range Henderson Defense over at AR15.com.

They talk about the Uzi first. Much of that is applicable to the M11/9 and similar SMGs.

I remember to Lage said he'd never seen one burned out before. Bulged, but not throat erosion.

I just don’t think it gets hot enough.

And the friction/heat just isn’t there. Prob 10s of 1ks vs under 10k for 556

He mentioned that they change the Uzi barrels every 8-10 months, but I wish he would have explained why.

I would think is has more to do with the composition of the projectiles you are feeding it. Both copper and brass are soft compared to steel, but brass is a bit harder. So if you use Montana Gold projectiles or a lot of S&B ammo, those brass jackets will produce a negligible amount of wear more than the copper, but not by much. And of course plain cast or poly-coated lead pills will wear even less. IVA8888 did a meltdown video a few years back, running 5000+ rounds of 9mm FMJ through a Faxon barrel, all on full-auto. The rifling was strong and intact.
Now there are obviously differences between different manufacturers of barrels, and some may be better or worse,...but that's a strong indication that the 9mm just doesn't really generate enough heat and/or pressure to wear out barrels as quickly as rifles tend to. In my opinion, that has primarily to do with the slower twist rate and shorter bearing surface engaged with said rifling, which just produces less friction than the longer and more radically spun rifle pills at higher velocities with more propellant burning behind them.

Per the ar15.com post:

"The barrels from Green Mountain have been 100% and zero issues with them. They run and run and even though they still look and spec good after 8-10 months, I have the staff swap out for new ones just for liability reasons."

You're more likely to need to reweld your receiver backplate, or change a number of other parts by the time you reach a round count sufficient to spoil a barrel.

I’ve bought and sold so many of these used 11/9 barrels. A bore brush and some bluing and they’re good as new. Never seen one blown out before
