Crazywolf,

I think that when IWI speaks about the Galil coming out in the U.S.A. they are referring to the Galil ACE. It's the newer (2.0) version of the Galil. Either way that is great news! Lou

I would LOVE to get my meathooks on an ACE, that would be very cool.
Riderboy, There is no doubt that the Galil ACE's improvement over the original Galil will be weight savings. The OG Galil was a heavy rifle to carry around. So the only issue that is up in the air with IWI introducing the Galil ACE in the U.S. market is whether they will use the lower receiver that uses the standard AR-15 (STANAG) magazines versus the receiver that takes standard Galil magazines only? I will be curious to see how IWI will handle this.

Here is a picture of the Galil ACE 21 (which is the equivalent size of the Micro Galil) in use with the Honduran Public Military Police (PMOP). The Honduran government chose to go with the non-NATO version of the Galil ACE.

I think the biggest hit for IWI will be introducing the .308 version of the Galil ACE to the U.S. market. This version will be similar to the Galil ACE 52 (pictured). What is exciting about this rifle to the American shooter will be its lighter weight, fully modular (rails for modern optics) and the battle tested performance from the original Galil. What is nice about the .308 Galil ACE is that it will readily accept the standard Galil 7.62/.308 magazines. I can't wait!

Great to see more IWI products available. Question: how did they lighten the ACE up, I thought the ACE still used a forged steel receiver.

When I talked to IWI officials a few times last year; they always brought up the fact of making semi-auto Aces; which would ber introduced in late 2014. They also make it in the 7.62 X 39 caliber.

The Ace is about 2 pounds lighter; due to some of its components made of composite materials

Description:
The Galil ACE rifles are the new generation of the famous Israeli Galil assault rifles. The Galil ACE represents full product line of military rifles in world's three most popular calibers (5.56x45 NATO, 7.62x39 M43 and 7.62x51 NATO) made in full spectrum of configurations, from compact carbine and up to long barreled marksman rifle. All Galil ACE rifles feature same basic design, based on combat-proven Galil action, and feature same array of ergonomic enhancements, including ambidextrous controls, adjustable telescoping buttstocks, comfortable pistol grips, integral Picatinny rails etc. The 5.56mm version of the Galil ACE assault rifle is adopted by Colombian army, and is manufactured under the Israeli license by Colombian government-owned factory Indumil.

The Galil ACE rifle is gas operated, select-fire weapon. It uses long-stroke gas operated action with gas piston located above the barrel. Locking is achieved by rotating bolt with dual locking lugs. The receiver is machined from steel, with polymer magazine housing / pistol grip unit attached below. The detachable stamped steel receiver cover houses an integral Picatinny rail and rear sight base. The charging handle is located on the left side of the receiver and is attached directly to the bolt carrier. To provide maximum protection from dust and dirt at all times, the charging handle slot is covered with spring-loaded dust cover which opens and closes after each shot automatically. The safety / fire mode seelctor is duplicated at both sides of the weapon, and has better shape when copmared to predecessors. Feed is from detachable box magazines; the NATO caliber versions (in 5.56 and 7.62mm) use standard Galil magazines with 35- and 25-round capcaity, respectively. The 7.62x39 versions use standard AK magazines with 30-round capacity. Standard sighting equipment includes protected front post (adjustable for zeroing) and protected flip-up type rear diopter sight. A wide array of modern optical sights can be installed on the integral Picatinny rail. All Galil ACE rifles (except for sub-compact ACE 21 and ACE 31 carbines) also feature a bayonet lug on the barrel.

There was a post sample 53 for sale in Florida last year (think it was between 1800.00 to 2200.00). If you got your local SOT to buy it; then de-mill it; you could build it as a semi.

The challenge is; finding someone to build you a receiver in a semi-configuration.

My concern would be the actual specifications of the receiver.
I highly doubt it is identical to the original specs with just a plastic housing.

I believe in-country demilling requirements only require destruction of the receiver and not the barrel?

Yes; receiver only.

Plus; your SOT could dissemble the rifle and ship the receiver to someone like Denny, who can make a program off of the specs of the part; just like the Hadar receiver we sent to Denny in making the first .308 receiver; before going the de-mill route.

This would be the closest spec you could go; except figuring composite material for the receiver (It is half and half).

Of course; if IWI sells these in the near future; then this is extra work.

But if not; it would be one project you could take real ownership in.

Here is a picture of the ejector side of the Galil ACE. This is the NATO model that I think will be what IMI will introduce to the U.S. market because it is set up to take the AR-15 magazines. The receiver for this rifle looks like it might be a little complicated to reproduce (not saying that it can't be done). It does look like it the lower might be comprised of 2 parts ( alloy and plastics)

This is great news. So I take it if importation of parts is ever banned we will have a US Galil maker, much like domestic AR's.
